Warning : violence and gore
Adam had an inkling that things were going too easily. Of course, they were strong warriors with plenty of experience, but still, his dad was a high-ranking noble. It was only a matter of time before someone smart activated the artifacts.
Most of the artifacts were situated outside of the mansion, to prevent intruders. Those were the strongest ones, as the Duke didn't think that someone could actually teleport into the mansion. Kaleb's level of magic was rare.
However, there were still artifacts inside the mansion, in case of a visitor choosing to revolt or harm the Duke. Those were manual, meaning that someone had to press their palm to the artifact, and then activate it with their thoughts. A more experienced person would have caught all of them in the chains, but this one must have been a beginner that could only catch one person at a time. He must have thought that Adam was the most dangerous with his spear, and also the easiest to catch as most of the time he stood in one place and moved his spear around him.
Adam didn't doubt that Blaze would take care of him, but the mansion also had other protective artifacts. They would need to be more cautious. To activate the artifact, the person also had to see the targets. As Blaze had run off, it meant that the artifact wasn't in this corridor, which meant...
Ah, he had found it.
Just beside Adam, on a wall, stood a huge mirror. The warrior could have bet his spear that it was a one-way mirror and that someone stood on the other side with the artifact. From now on, they would need to look out for mirrors and shatter them on sight.
For now, he needed to take care of the guards surrounding him.
The men and women had been circling around him like cautious predators preparing to attack a prey. However, they were wrong about their role.
As soon as most of them were close enough, Adam stomped his right foot. Huge ice spikes came out from under his foot and easily pierced all the guards, killing them. Before the ones on his other side could react, the warrior stomped his left foot, creating the same trick. Adam had stored small vials with water under his feet for such situations, in the sole of his boots, he needed to stomp hard to break them and use the water inside.
Now, all that was left were the guards before and behind him.
The warrior let his tongue roll in his mouth before gathering all the spit he could and he spitted at his spear. The saliva, in contact with the magic metal, expanded until it was long like the weapon, before bouncing toward the guards like an arrow shot from a bow. In a matter of seconds since the last spike attack, Adam sent an ice blade slashing through his foes, neatly cutting their head from their neck.
The warrior didn't need to take care of the guards behind him, as his bear had already cleared the way and now stood behind him, back to back.
"The things you can do with your spit, Pup..." Evan groaned and Adam smirked, memories of past intimate times with his bear coming to his mind. He was an expert at toying with his tongue and saliva.
Suddenly, the chains restraining Adam broke and fell into dust, freeing him. The warrior grunted and groaned as he stretched gratefully.
"Welp, I'm not that young anymore..." Adam whined, remembering the times Evan had tied him up and they had enjoyed passionate nights together. Now, his muscles couldn't endure the strain anymore without making him regret it. The giant snorted at his comment, shaking his head fondly.
"You just need to stretch more." Evan said as he punched a guard's nose, making it explode with a sickening noise. Adam grumbled at his comment, saying something about impossible poses under his breath. The two quickly took care of the rest of the guards, standing back to back, just like the old times.
Once there were no more incoming foes, Ash gently slid down Evan's shoulder and then arm. The giant raised his arm until his hand was on his lover's shoulder, and Ash passed the man-made bridge so he could heal his dad.
Snuggling in Adam's slightly long black hair, laced with braids, pearls and feathers, Ash worked his magic, dealing efficiently with the cuts and bruises.
"Thank you, Ash." The warrior gently petted his son's noodle form, making the snake hiss softly to tell 'no worries'. While Blaze was a master of talking in his shifted form, Ash was more shy and preferred to hiss instead. With many years of training, the little family could now interpret any hiss coming from their youngest.
"I'm back!!!" Blaze shouted as he came stumbling toward them, his little paws not able to withstand his phenomenal energy. Evan crouched and the fox jumped in his arms, snuggling against his father's hairy chest.
"Good job." The giant praised his son as he stroked his black and red fur. Blaze yipped in joy at being complimented, making the two parents look into each other's eyes with love toward their family. Once Blaze had come down from his high, which often happened after a battle, Evan set him down on his paw and they continued on their exploration of the mansion.
Adam kept Ash around his neck, the snake having fallen asleep again.
"From what I remember of the staff, if it's still the same after all those years, we should have taken care of everyone. All that's left is my family's members. Well, ex-family." Adam explained as they looked around, correcting his wording as he saw the way Evan scowled at the word family.
They shattered each mirror they saw, sometimes revealing the wall and others showing a hidden space big enough for one person with a door. From the way Blaze described the corridor he had taken to reach the door and the person with the artifact earlier, it was a servants' passage used to not disturb the nobles. The doors were hidden behind tapestries, so only those with the knowledge required could access them.
As they passed empty rooms after empty rooms, Adam was starting to get impatient. They had to be there for backup if Leo and Kaleb needed them, this game of hide-and-seek was getting too long. Rummaging in his brain, Adam finally came to the conclusion that there was only one place that he could think of where all the family members would hide if there were intruders.
"This way." The warrior said as they reached an intersection, his pace faster as he became more confident in his guess. His little family followed him without question. It may have been weird, but it was little acts like that of trust that warmed his frozen heart.
It didn't take long to reach his goal, the path of the mansion memorised when he had planned an escape route.
It felt like it was not that long ago, when in fact it had already been years.
The heavy door before him was still the same, crude carving of beasts tainting the wood. The display of arrogance spoke volumes of the Salovski's family as the image portrayed the water snakes, the family emblem, choking lions, a rival family's animal. The childish act was nothing more than that, childish.
Once, Adam had found it intimidating, but now, he wanted to laugh at it.
So he did.
The warrior let out a loud laugh, his cheeks burning under the strain of his smile as his abdominal walls contracted. Adam laughed at the family that had kept him suppressed for years, abusing and neglecting an innocent child. He laughed for the young him who only wanted love, and couldn't understand why he couldn't receive any. Adam laughed for all the times he had wanted to smile and play with others, only to end up beaten.
He laughed for the children who were abused like him, or even worse.
He laughed at the unjust system, the poor squeezed under the rich's thumbs.
He laughed for those who had faced life with hopeful eyes, only to be blinded by the word's cruelty.
He laughed for those who couldn't do it anymore.
Adam laughed, because he was free to do so.
