After a filling breakfast downstairs at the inn, the trio headed back to their room to gather all their things before leaving, not necessarily expecting to come back. In a war, the returns were never guaranteed.
Adam and Evan had purchased a few things for the kids while strolling the village yesterday, so they had a few more bags than when they arrived, but overall, it was easy to carry all their stuff in their arms.
Once they exited the inn, they were met with crowds of giants on each side of the road. The trio froze, not sure what was happening.
Once the giants saw them, they started cheering and clapping loudly, which sent much wind toward the three men. Once they understood that the giants were there to encourage them, the men felt touched, rarely having received that much warmth from other beings.
They started walking again toward their goal, ruffling their birdnest hair to try and straighten the strands, only for more giants to clap and send wind. Once they finally arrived at the meeting point, they looked like they had passed a hurricane.
"Good morning! It seems like you received some encouragement from our fellow giants?" Ben teased them once he saw their messy appearance, making Kaleb huff in annoyance at having to fix his short curly hair once again.
"Follow me, everyone is ready." The commander said before teasingly ruffling the hair that Kaleb had just fixed, making the dark mage snap his teeth toward the man with a growl. The giant only laughed in return and walked toward the training center with the two men and the angry puppy hot on his heels.
Once they entered the room, their breath stopped, their eyes widening in awe at the sight of the training hall filled to the brim with giants who towered above them, all wearing full body armors with only their determined eyes visible, and all holding some sort of weapon, be it swords, bows or even spears. Adam whistled at the spears, appreciating the rare quality. Humans were more fond of swords, so their knowledge in spears was limited, and the Aleksy's tribe didn't have much technology to be able to reach this level of craft because of their nomadic nature.
Adam still cherished his spear more because of its emotional value, and he was used to fighting with it after all those years, it had become his third arm.
The quartet walked up the stairs and Ben looked at Evan and Adam, silently asking if they wanted to speak. Both men shook their heads, not fond of speaking before a hall full of giants. The commander shrugged, having expected this answer, before facing his soldiers. He scrutinized them up and down and then nodded, looking satisfied with what he was seeing.
The three men tuned out as the commander started his speech, bored with such formalities and much more used to just directly heading in battles. Soon, the hall was filled with battle roars and much clamor from the soldiers, making Adam and Evan's blood broil with anticipation, while Kaleb winced at the loud noise.
"They are ready, it's whenever you want, Kaleb." Ben turned to face the trio, putting on his own hamlet. They knew that they wouldn't instantly go to war when coming back to the tribe, needing to make a consensus with the tribe and their other allies, but there was a chance that the tribe had been attacked while they were gone and that they would be met with an enemy's army once they headed back.
Better be safe than sorry.
"Oki!" Kaleb exclaimed as he bounced a few steps away. The mage raised his arms, closed his eyes and took on a focused face, which was rarely the case with him. Needing to transport such a big group, he couldn't do the same trick as he had done with Evan and Adam. He started chanting in a weird language, black smoke coming out of his pores and shadows dancing at his feet.
They all looked with wonder at the mage, truly starting to understand just how powerful and dangerous he was. Had Kaleb been in the foe's camp, they would have been done. Luckily for them, the puppy was good-willed, even though he was strange.
Adam and Evan took a step closer when they saw blood start to gush out of the mage's nose, but Kaleb only shook his head as he continued his spell, weird magical marks appearing all above the ground in the hall, around the soldiers and the quartet. The chant started to get faster and louder, as if echoed in the hall as the magical marks grew larger, taller.
With a final shout from Kaleb, the shadows engulfed them.
When they opened their eyes again, they were back in the forest.
Adam and Evan glanced around them, confirming that they were on the side of the tribe, just far enough not to alert any enemy if the tribe had been seized, but close enough so that they could see suspicious moves.
Adam turned back toward Kaleb to congratulate him, only to see the mage falling backward, with blood coming out of his mouth, nose, ears and eyes.
The warrior hurried to catch the man, but a figure appeared behind the mage and held him up. Adam looked up to thank him, only to see an unknown face. He froze, and he could tell that the others had also seen what he saw as they all shut up their small talks and looked over.
The man was tall, with piercing silver eyes and a pretty face, making him look like a beautiful but dangerous creature. His features were those of a man, but he had the ethereal beauty of a woman. He wore decontracted and baggy clothes, making him look frail, but they could all feel the hidden muscles under the clothes, hiding like a snake. His skin was a deadly white, as if never kissed by the sun. What really made them freeze however, was his long golden hair, flowing in cascades over his back and shoulders.
Golden hair was the sign of the royal family.
