Once Evan remembered that the man before him was Kaleb, he decided to bring the injured to the tribe. It was, after all, thanks to him that he was now free from the slave curse and could act like a free man.
Evan always reciprocated good intentions with the same energy.
The giant took the man that had fainted in his arms and carried him to the tribe. The guards at the entrance looked at Kaleb with suspicion in their eyes, but knowing Evan, they knew he wouldn't just bring anyone in because of pity.
"I have a life debt toward this man. I will repay him by saving his life and then send him on his way once he is healed. Please, inform the chef." The giant answered their silent question, knowing that if he didn't, he would probably be bothered in a few minutes.
The guards nodded before relaying the message to their comrades who sent a messenger to the chef. They stepped aside to let Evan in the village, looking with curious eyes at the injured in his arms. They wondered how such a puny and strange-looking person could possibly make the giant indebted to him, but wisely kept their mouths shut.
Evan brought Kaleb into his family's tent and put him on a cushion that they had added this year when Riz insisted on sleeping in their tent, supposedly to always be near Ash and be able to protect him.
Blaze had run off somewhere to hunt, probably, Ash was playing with Riz in the village and Adam had gone with other warriors to hunt for dinner.
Evan didn't want to exhaust Ash too much by asking him to heal the man, so he started undressing Kaleb and looking over his wounds, cleaning them as he went and wrapping in bandages the minor ones after applying a healing ointment. After years of training, Ash was pretty efficient in healing and had trained his mana pool to be able to heal many grave injuries in a short amount of time.
However, Kaleb's arrival fell at a bad time as the child had to heal many warriors this morning after they had encountered an enraged wind elephant, so his pool was near empty. It was only recently that they had started seeing more crazy animals, with the same symptoms as those they had found years ago. It reminded Evan and Adam of what they came here to do, and the two trained harder than ever, but they didn't know when would be the right timing to leave.
They had cut off all contacts with the outside since joining the tribe, and so were pretty much ignorant of what was happening. Kaleb's appearance could also be considered a good thing as he would be able to inform them of the situation outside.
Once Evan had finished dressing the wounds as well as he could, he hurried off to find Ash. Kaleb looked like he needed a little healing to be able to survive the night, even with the care he had provided.
The giant searched the village as he pondered on the nature of the dark mage's wounds. They didn't look like they had been made by beasts. In fact, it was orchestrated to look like claws and fang marks, but years of fighting and scars had taught Evan that those were fake, made with a blade from a human. Someone had tried to kill Kaleb and wanted to make it look like a monster's attack.
The cuts were too even and precise to be an animal, or even a human with a cheap blade. It was done by professionals. Still, leaving their prey without checking that his breath had stopped was a dumb mistake unlikely for professionals to do on their own, so they most likely had a dumb master who wanted Kaleb to suffer as much as possible before dying and as such had asked them to leave him barely breathing.
They probably hadn't expected people to find his body so soon deep in the woods, and if Evan hadn't decided to scout further away from the village today, Kaleb would have, in fact, died.
Evan grunted at the sudden impact around his legs, glancing down at a grinning Ash.
"I caught you!" The shifter said, showing off his missing upper teeth in the middle. Evan's eyes grew fond at his son's cuteness and he ruffled his ash-blond hair with his large hand. Ash's grey eyes widened before squinting from satisfaction, his slit-like golden pupils narrowing.
"Yes, you did. Good boy, I didn't even notice you." Evan praised the child, before taking him in his arms and spinning the snake around. Ash laughed out loud as he was raised high in the air and spun around, waving his arms and kicking his feet as he tried to stop the giggles from coming out of his mouth.
Since Blaze had spun him around in his snake form years ago when finding out about his snake form for the first time, Ash had been thrown around many more times and had gradually grown accustomed to it, and even enjoyed it now. It always reminded him of all the love and acceptance he received when he shifted for the first time after years of abuse.
Seeing the red face of the child, out of breath from laughing uncontrollably, Evan took mercy and put the snake against his chest, holding his bottom with one arm and the other around the shifter's shoulder. The giant rocked Ash lightly as the kid found his breath again, taking in large gulps of air.
Once he had calmed down, Evan brushed the bangs covering his face aside to get a good view of his reaction at his inquiry. The parents knew that the snake felt bad for saying no at anything they said, so they had learned to analyse his micro expression to know if the snake really didn't mind doing something.
Ash blinked at him innocently, smiling confusedly with a tilt of his head.
"I have something to ask of you, Ash. Feel free to say no. There's this man, Kaleb, he's an old acquaintance of your Dad and I. He's injured and I would appreciate it if you could use your last bit of mana to heal him as much as you can. Do you want to?" Evan explained patiently, trying to use the right words not to make Ash feel obligated to help. The snake seemed to ponder for a bit, humming as he rubbed his chin like an old man. The giant muffled down a chuckle as he guessed that Ash must have spent too much time with Rick recently and had started to copy the scout's old habits.
"Sure!" Ash grinned at the giant, throwing his arms around Evan's neck when the latter thanked him. The snake rubbed himself all over his Papa's neck while the giant started to walk into their tent's direction, making him chuckle at his son's cuddly antics.
It was time to save the dark mage's life.
