TW: life or death situations

Charlotte held on to her bump and Reece held onto Charlotte. Autumn who had barely managed to compose herself called Winter. "No, no there is no need. We still don't know anything. I will call you if you need to come. You will likely need to pick Marjorie up if it comes to that. No, no don't do that yet. I don't think it would be good. It would alert the girls. Okay, I love you, my darling." She hung up.

Charlotte who was staring blankly couldn't believe this was real. It had to be a nightmare. It had to be. How could she be so damn stupid? If she hadn't told Mia she was nervous that night she never would have gone for the tequila. That damn tequila. It was going to take everything from her. Her wife. Her beautiful wife. The twins. Why? Anger was building up inside of Charlotte. She was trembling and Reece tried to pull her closer. Just hours before she had thought that tender when you need him Reece was her favorite. Now she wanted him to let her go. Let her be. Let her go. She couldn't take it anymore and she shoved him away.

"Okay, okay Char"

"Just don't!"

He held his hands up and backed away from her. "I won't. Just tell us what you need. How can we support you?"

"You can't. I have to go." She made for the door, but Autumn stood in her way.

"She needs you here. No matter what happens she will need you here, Charlotte. Running isn't going to change anything. The only people who can change what happens are those doctors and nurses who took her out of here." Autumn wasn't about to let her leave. "You're scared and we understand that. We are scared too, Charlotte, but we need to stay together." Autumn wasn't saying that her biggest fear right now was that if she left the room, she might get the news while she was alone. She wasn't going to let that happen.

Their bodies were both pressed against the door, and they jumped when someone knocked from the other side. Charlotte backed away. She didn't want to see who was on the other side of the door. As long as the door was closed Mia might be dead, but she also might be alive. If they opened the door Charlotte would have to face whatever the reality was. She shook her head and the panic started to rise in her chest. Reece went to her. "May I?" He held his arms out to her. She nodded with tears running down her cheeks and he wrapped her in his warm embrace. Autumn opened the door.

"Hi, I am Doctor Jones. May I come in?"

The whole room heard the smallest voice. "Is she ... Is she ..." She couldn't bring herself to say the word.

"I don't know, dear. I am not her doctor." She cleared her throat before continuing. " I am a pediatrician. I am here to let you know how the twins are doing so far. They are both healthy and doing surprisingly well considering the circumstances of their birth. We would like to continue to watch them, but as you and your family are already set up in here, I believe we could bring them in shortly."

Charlotte fell apart in Reece's arms. The doctor looked to him for an answer. He gave her a nod. She left the room saying the nurses would be in to prepare the room, and Autumn closed the door behind her.

Charlotte began to pace the room as nurses came in and out bringing supplies and preparing the room. The twins made it, maybe Mia had as well. She had to believe she was still alive. She couldn't bring herself to believe she could ever survive in a world without her.
