Vivian

Vivian woke up early and slipped out of the bed hoping not to wake Siobhan. She had said that they would go ring shopping together, but she couldn't let her do that again. Not for her. Not a second time. She checked on Jamey before heading down the stairs. She wrote a quick note for Siobhan and slipped out the front door.

She had done a fair bit of research for what she thought Siobhan would like and had a specific jeweler in mind. They dealt in antiquities, and she was certain she would find what she was looking for. For her sham of an engagement Siobhan had picked out a sizable Emerald. So, she wanted to steer clear of anything that would trigger that memory.

She had done so much work on herself to overcome all that had happened, but Viv knew that it was still a struggle at times. It was less than two years ago she had chosen a life of misery to protect Viv from Roger. Viv would never forget what she tried to do. Roger had known about their friendship. Of course he did. He had his little spies everywhere. Worse yet he knew that they meant more to each other than your average friend. They hadn't said it yet, but they both felt it. He may have even known before they were able to discern it themselves.

It was a complicated time for both of them. Vivian was in a new place with a new job. No local friends to speak of, but regardless of what people told her about Siobhan she was drawn to her. When they started their "meetings" she saw a softer side of her. A side she wondered if anyone else had ever seen. Her smile was enough to make her breath catch. The first time she heard her laugh nearly stopped her heart.

When she saw the ring. When she realized, what Siobhan had agreed to. To marry that vile man. It broke her. She had to keep moving for Jamey, but it was like slogging through wet cement. Two months she walked around with her heart in shreds. She almost didn't go to the ball that night. But in the end, she couldn't resist seeing her. Even if it was with her slimey fiancé. Her heart broke without her anyway.

Vivian spotted a ring that shook her from her thoughts. A beautiful vintage pearl cut moss agate in the most beautiful setting. This was the one.

Siobhan

Siobhan woke to an empty bed. She didn't hear the shower so she could only assume Viv was already downstairs. She decided to shower and dress before joining her as they had a day out planned. As she pulled a pair of worn jeans on, she heard Jamey in the hallway. She called out to him and told him Mama was downstairs. She heard him descend and then return. "Siobhan? Mama isn't down there."

"Okay, sweet boy, I will be down in a few minutes." She was puzzled but finished getting ready before going down with Jamey. He was in the lounge watching TV so she went to get him some breakfast and found the note in the kitchen.

BonBon,

I know we said we would go together, but I can't let you pick out your own ring. Not this time. I will be back soon.

All my love,

Viv

This woman warmed her heart everyday. She couldn't stop the smile that crossed her face. She thought for a few moments and then called out for Jamey to put his shoes on.

They stopped and had breakfast quick, and Jamey was overjoyed. They seldom went out for breakfast or any meal really. Vivian was always cooking or baking so there wasn't a need except as a treat. As they headed to the jeweler Jamie spoke. "Mum?"

Siobhan wasn't sure she heard right. "Did you say something, little man?"

"Mum, thanks for taking me out to breakfast."

Siobhan felt the burn of the tears before they began to fall. Viv had told her that he was calling her mum but hearing him say it to her. To call her that. It somehow made their little family so much more real to her. As she drove, she cried with the broadest smile across her face.

She had warned him to stay with her inside the jewelers, but it turned out not to be a problem as he was completely mesmerized by each ring they brought for Siobhan to see. The rings were all nice, but they just didn't scream Viv to her. She also was aware that with Viv's line of work staying on the simpler side would be best. She still wanted it to be elegant.

They brought out another selection and she and Jamey pointed to the same one and said in unison, "that one!" A beautiful setting the was simple yet elegant with a nearly 2 ct pale blue diamond. This was the one.
