A couple of days had passed, and (Y/n) still hadn't seen any of her friends at school. At first, she refused to believe the news about Reina's death. It had to be a misunderstanding, a cruel rumor. But with each passing day, her denial began to crack under the weight of reality.
She had been with Reina not long before the girl's death. How could she be gone just like that? The more time she spent alone, the harder it was to avoid the creeping truth. Her thoughts churned, the unanswered questions circling in her mind as she walked toward school.
Her life felt like it had become a series of goodbyes. Taro. Aiko. Reina. Death seemed to follow her, and now it had claimed someone else close to her.
The sound of her footsteps echoed faintly on the pavement as the school came into view. She pulled her jacket tighter against the crisp October air, her breath visible in small clouds. The date for Aiko's funeral had finally been set: next Wednesday, the day before Halloween. A strange mixture of relief and sadness settled over her. At least now there was closure on that front, something certain in this mess.
(Y/n) neared the school's entrance where the familiar chaos of students bustled around. She weaved through the throng of bodies but squinted as a familiar flash of yellow hair caught her eye.
Yuuto?
Her heart skipped a beat. She hadn't expected to see any of the boys today. A strange mixture of relief, confusion, and anxiety gripped her chest. He didn't seem to notice her, his gaze locked ahead as he moved through the crowd, his posture stiff and purposeful.
She stood frozen for a moment, debating in her head if she should go up to him. The teen started chewing on her lip as she started walking again. Reina was my friend too. Coming to a decision, she swiftly closed the gap between them, weaving between students before landing at his side.
He turned toward her, his golden hair catching the morning light, his face shifting in surprise. "(Y/n)? Oh, I apologize. I didn't see you."
She waved off his apology, though her nerves churned. Now that she was here, walking beside him, the silence between them felt suffocating, as if there was an elephant in the hall that neither of them dared address. The background noise of students laughing, chatting, and locker doors slamming felt oddly distant, muted under the weight of her thoughts.
They walked side by side, their steps falling in rhythm, but each moment without words felt heavier. Finally, (Y/n) broke the silence, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm... sorry. About what happened."
Yuuto's Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed, his usual light demeanor replaced by a quiet sadness. "It was an unfortunate thing." He let out a measured breath, like someone forcing composure they barely had. "She's in a better place now." He adjusted his glasses, though it felt more like a nervous habit than anything else.
"How... how did it happen?" she asked tentatively, glancing at him from the corner of her eye. She didn't want to pry, but the questions gnawed at her. She needed to understand, to have some kind of peace of mind.
Yuuto took a moment before answering as if carefully choosing his words. "She went down to fix the water heater," he began, his voice steady but oddly flat. "It was leaking from one of the pipes. Supposedly, she got up to go grab some tools, but she must've slipped in the water. When she reached out to stabilize herself... she grabbed the breaker." He sighed, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I'm sure you can put two and two together after that."
(Y/n)'s mind swirled as the gruesome imagery played out in her head. Reina alone in the basement, slipping, electricity surging, her body twisting in the water until it finally stopped moving.
