After she finished preparing the turkey with Keiji, he dismissed her, an unexpected move, considering how insistent he'd been about spending the entire day together. She didn't question it, though. The reprieve was welcome.

Her feet carried her up the stairs, the soft creak of each step filling the otherwise quiet house. Just as she was about to turn down the hallway toward her room, a voice stopped her cold.

"Knew I'd catch you sneaking off," the smooth voice drawled from behind.

(Y/n) spun around to find Kai leaning lazily against the stair railing, his golden eyes fixed on her with a lazy yet intent gaze. He didn't look suspicious, just mildly curious. The dim hallway light reflected off his messy blond and black hair, and his posture was relaxed, but there was something sharp about him that kept her on edge.

"Where's Keiji?" he asked, his tone light but edged with subtle interest.

(Y/n) chewed her lip, forcing herself to stay composed. Play the act. She cast a glance toward the direction of the kitchen, though the room was far behind her now. "He dismissed me," she said simply, keeping her voice casual.

Kai frowned, his brows pulling together in mild disbelief as he straightened up from the railing. "That doesn't sound like him at all," he murmured. "Did you do something to piss him off?"

(Y/n) shook her head. "No. I was just talking to Souta, that's all."

Kai chuckled at that, a low, knowing sound that made her stomach tighten. "Yeah, that'd do it." He tilted his head as if considering something.

"Well, it'd be a shame to leave you all by yourself for the rest of the day." He stepped toward her, his expression softening into something that looked almost warm. "Come on," he said, already turning down the hallway toward his room.

(Y/n) froze in place, her heart thudding painfully against her ribs. Every instinct told her to decline, to turn around and go straight to her room. But she couldn't. If she wanted to find any useful information, she had to stay close to them, keep playing along until the right moment came.

After a moment's hesitation, she forced her feet to move, following Kai down the dim corridor.

When he noticed she was complying, a small, satisfied smile curled at the edges of his lips. He reached out and took her hand without warning, his fingers cool against hers. His grip was light but firm, and it made her skin crawl. Play the part. Play the part, she reminded herself, forcing her expression to stay neutral.

Kai led her down the hall until they reached his room. He nudged the door open with his foot, and together they stepped inside.

"You seem to be doing a lot better," Kai commented, stealing a glance at her as he let go of her hand. His voice was light, but his gaze lingered on her, studying her with quiet curiosity.

(Y/n) swallowed hard, resisting the urge to shrink under his scrutiny. "Yeah," she murmured awkwardly. "I feel a lot better... Thank you."

She moved toward the bed and sat down on the edge, but her body was stiff, her hands clenched tightly in her lap. The silence between them stretched thin, heavy with unspoken tension.

Kai didn't try to make much conversation after that. Instead, he drifted over to his desk, opened his laptop, and started typing away. His fingers moved effortlessly across the keys, the soft clicking of the keyboard filling the quiet room. Occasionally, (Y/n) caught him sneaking glances at her from the corner of his eye, but he didn't say a word.

His silence struck her as odd. Kai wasn't usually one to keep to himself, at least not with her. The quiet felt deliberate, like he was waiting for something. The back of her neck prickled with unease, but she forced herself to stay calm.
