After a long, grueling day at the office, Autumn trudged through the front door, her shoulders heavy with the weight of disappointment. The morning had started with a missed deadline, an email from her father, followed by a series of frustrating meetings with parents that seemed to drain her energy with every passing minute. By the time the clock struck five, she felt completely spent, her enthusiasm for the day long extinguished.
She kicked off her shoes and let out a sigh, the kind that echoed the exhaustion in her soul. The house was quiet as usual, a stark contrast to the chaos she had faced at work. All she wanted was to escape the stress, if only for a little while. With a determined shuffle, Autumn made her way to the living room, where the soft, inviting couch beckoned her.
Collapsing onto the cushions, she sank into the fabric, feeling the tension in her body begin to melt away. She closed her eyes, letting the silence envelop her like a warm blanket. As she drifted off, the stresses of the day faded into the background, replaced by the comforting thought that she could take a moment for herself.
That peaceful state was soon broken when images of her childhood danced around her head. It all being so clear. The longer she slept the worse the memories became. She was soon woken up by her husband.
"Winter, i miss her. I miss my big sister." Autumn mumbled as she fought back her own tears. Winter listened closely to what his wife was saying. "Come here, my sweet, you can let it all out." He hushed her while pulling her against his chest before pulling out his phone and sending a message to Charlotte.
"I had a dream about the time we came home from school, and she made us dance in the rain. I was upset because our father decided we could walk home. Reece was to angry at him to care about anything else but Mia noticed that i was crying as i walked behind them so she stopped and took hold of my hand and made me dance with her as we walked along the paths. The further we walked, the quicker Reece calmed down, more for my sake. I would have been about six at the time, so they would have been nine. When we finally got home, we were shouted at for getting so wet in the rain, but Mia stood up for us while i showered, and Reece found me dry clothes, " Autumn explained quietly. The pain was clear in her voice, but winter just let her keep talking.
"Winter, i wish we could go back, i love... well, I loved her. She can hardly talk to me anymore, but all i really want is my big sister. I've got Reece back after prom, but i never got her." With that, there was a knock on the door which startled the emotional woman.
"My sweet, you try and take some deep breaths, and I will be back," winter hushed before going to answer the door. The second he opened it, the questions started. "Right, stop, and just listen. She is really upset, i haven't seen her cry like this in ages, but she had a dream about your childhood, and she keeps saying she wants her big sister, just please don't hurt her." He whispered calmly before letting them inside.
As the rain pattered softly against the window, Autumn sat on the edge of the couch, tears streaming down her cheeks. She felt a wave after a wave of emotions crashing over her, leaving her feeling vulnerable and exposed. It had been a long week, and the weight of her dream had finally become too much to bear.
The three friends could hear her quiet sobs from the front door, Winter quickly let his friends and let Mia be the first one to rush into the living room. Her heart sank at the sight of Autumn, her shoulders shaking with each breath. Without a word, she knelt beside her, wrapping her arms around her in a gentle embrace.
"Hey, it's okay, im here now." She whispered, her familiar voice soothing Autumn. "I'm here." She repeasted as she held her close, feeling her warmth and the tremors of her body slowly begin to ease. After a few moments, she pulled back just enough to look into her eyes. "Do you want to talk about it?" Mia questioned calmly.
Autumn shook her head, still too overwhelmed to find the right words. Mia nodded, understanding that sometimes silence was the best comfort for Autumn. Emotions had never been her thing. "Okay, Aut. Then let's just breathe together," she suggested, using the same technique she did when they were kids. She took a deep breath, encouraging her to follow. "In through your nose and then out through your mouth." Mia whispered calmly.
As they breathed in sync, Autumn felt the heaviness in her chest start to lift. Mia made sure that she stayed close, her presence a steady anchor in her emotional storm. "You're not alone in this." She reminded her softly. "I'm right here, and we'll get through it together."
Gradually, the tears subsided, and Autumn felt a sense of calm wash over her. She leaned her head against Mia's shoulder, grateful for her unwavering support. "Thank you for being here," she finally said, her voice still shaky but filled with warmth. Mia smiled, brushing his fingers through her hair. "Always, Auts. I'm always here for you. I will always be your big sister." Autumn just looked at mia in awe as she felt her bottom lip trembling. "I never stopped loving you throughout any of it. I just had too many emotions of my own to be able to show anyone love till i met Char." Mia whispered. Autumn listened closely to mia, and she knew she could face anything as long as they were together.
