"Siobhan, can we talk?" Vivian asked, her voice unusually soft as she sat on the edge of their bed. Siobhan, folding laundry, looked up with a smile. "Of course, love. What's on your mind?"
"I've been thinking," Viv began, pausing to choose her words carefully, "about us, about our future. And I was wondering how you feel about expanding our family?" Siobhan's expression changed instantly. Her eyes, moments before filled with warmth, now flashed with anger. "Are you serious, Viv? We've talked about this. I thought we were on the same page."
Viv's heart sank. "I just wanted to know where you were at. It was just a question!" She snapped back without hesitation. She didn't mean it, but her walls went straight back up.
"No, it's not just a question, Viv! It feels like you're trying to change everything we have, like you're not happy with this, with us." Siobhan retorted, her voice rising. "I love our family as it is with Jamie. We have our freedom, and he is old enough to join us on adventures. Why would you want to mess that up?"
Vivian watched as Siobhan got up from her spot next to her and began pacing up and down their bedroom. "That was all he wanted me for, and now here you are doing the same. I'm not some kind of baby maker for everyone!" She snapped without even thinking about what she was saying. "Bon bon, can i explain?" Viv questioned quietly as she slowly stood up, but the more she moved, the more tense Siobhan became.
"Im going to sit down, and you can come to me." She explained before doing exactly that. "I think i need some air." The blonde haired woman mumbled before making her way towards the door. Viv watched closely. "Siobhan running away won't change anything. You will come back, and the situation is the same. Talk to me and tell me what you are thinking. Please talk to me." Vivian spoke quietly to her.
Siobhan moved and sat across the room from Viv, the aroma of their perfume and fresh washing, doing little to soothe her nerves. She hated serious conversations with anyone, and it hurt even more knowing that she wasn't able to get out of the situation.
"Viv, can we talk about something serious to do with this?" she began, her voice barely above a whisper. Viv, ever attentive, patted the spot on the bed next to her. "Of course, Bons. What's going on?"
Siobhan hesitated, then plunged in. "I've been thinking a lot about what you said about expanding our family before you mentioned it, and I realized I haven't been completely honest about my feelings." She paused, searching for the right words. Vivian took hold of Siobhans hand gently as the nerves built up inside the dark-haired woman. "The truth is, Viv, the thought of getting pregnant terrifies me." Her eyes welled up with tears as she was about to confess her deepest fears and secrets. "H-he wanted me to have his baby, but when it did happen and I fell pregnant, I got an abortion before he even knew. I never told him. To this day, he just thinks I can't get pregnant." Siobhan whispered as she choked back a sob.
Vivian went to hug her, but Siobhan moved back slightly before going on to talk about her fears about the changes to her body, the pain of childbirth, the immense responsibility of raising a child. "I'm scared, Viv. Scared of losing myself, scared of not being a good mother, scared of everything that comes with it. I really just can't. " She looked up slightly at Viv, her eyes pleading for understanding. "Can you understand that?"
Siobhan's confession hung in the air, heavy with vulnerability. Viv listened intently, her heart aching for the woman she loved. As Siobhan's tears began to fall, Viv didn't hesitate. She shuffled slightly closer and pulled Siobhan into a tight embrace.
Siobhan buried her face in Viv's shoulder, her body shaking with sobs. Viv held her close, stroking her hair and whispering soothing words. "I understand, Siobhan," Viv said softly, her voice filled with compassion. "I understand your fears, your worries. It's okay to be scared." She held Siobhan tighter, letting her cry it out, offering a safe space for her emotions. "I'm here, and we'll face this together if it's something we come round to. No matter what we decide, I'll support you. Your feelings are valid, and I will we will never do something that we aren't ready for. I love you." In that moment, wrapped in Viv's arms, Siobhan felt a sense of comfort and reassurance wash over her. She knew that whatever the future held, she wouldn't have to face it alone.
After a while, viv moved slightly to look at Siobhan to see that her eyes were now red and puffy. "Bons, i would never make you carry our baby. I was going to be the one who was pregnant. I was honestly just asking for your opinion about it and maybe thinking about using your eggs, but darling, it's okay." Vivian spoke quietly as she carefully moved Siobhan, so she was sat on her lap. "I've got you." Vivian hushed
Siobhan traced Vivians fingers gently as she held them. Vivian had always been clear about her desire to be a mother. Siobhan, on the other hand, had been more hesitant, her life focused on her career as a sculptor. The thought of pregnancy, of the sheer responsibility of raising a child, had always felt overwhelming. Yet, looking at Vivian's earnest face, Siobhan felt a shift within herself.
She saw the depth of Vivian's love, her unwavering commitment, and she knew, with a certainty that surprised her, that she wanted to share this journey with her.
"Okay," Siobhan said, her voice a little shaky. "Let's do it. Let's have a baby." Vivian's face lit up, her eyes sparkling with joy. She reached around Siobhan and held her closer while still keeping hold of Siobhan's hand, her grip firm and reassuring. In that moment, surrounded by the warmth of their cosy bedroom, Siobhan knew they were about to embark on the greatest adventure of their lives together.
"Bon, I'm going to go downstairs and make us both a hot chocolate, and then when i come back, we can put on a movie and snuggle up in bed." Vivian spoke quietly as she carefully moved Siobhan onto the bed next to her.
As the rain hammered against the windows, mirroring the storm raging inside Siobhan. She sat huddled on the bed, a blanket pulled tight around her shoulders, but the chill ran deeper than skin. The words echoed in her mind, sharp and cruel, chipping away at her confidence.
Vivian found her there, a silent sentinel in the dim light. Without a word, she placed the two steaming mugs on the bedside table and knelt beside the bed, gently pulling Siobhan into her arms. Siobhan didn't resist, burying her face in Vivian's shoulder, the familiar scent of lavender, and sunshine a small comfort in the darkness. Vivian held her close, her hand stroking Siobhan's hair, a rhythmic, soothing motion. She didn't offer empty platitudes or dismiss the pain with false reassurances. She simply held her, a solid, unwavering presence against the storm.
Time seemed to blur as Siobhan wept, the tears a release of pent-up frustration and self-doubt. Vivian held her tighter, her warmth seeping into Siobhan's bones, chasing away the chill. Slowly, the storm inside began to subside, the sharp edges of the criticism softening. In the quiet embrace of the woman she loved, Siobhan found solace, a safe harbour where she could weather any storm, knowing she wasn't alone. "How about cuddles and that movie i promised?" Vivian whispered softly while moving to sit on the bed next to Siobhan, pulling her into her chest.
The soft glow of the tv illuminated the room as Vivian and Siobhan settled into bed. They were halfway through a cheesy rom-com, the kind they both secretly loved but would never admit to anyone else. Vivian was propped up against the pillows, her arm draped comfortably around Siobhan's shoulders.
As the predictable plot unfolded on the screen, Siobhan found herself relaxing deeper into Vivian's side. The warmth radiating from her girlfriend was a soothing balm, melting away the stress of the day. She nestled closer, her head finding the perfect spot just beneath Vivian's collarbone.
Vivian gently stroked Siobhan's hair, her fingers tracing soothing patterns against her scalp. A comfortable silence settled between them, punctuated only by the occasional shuffle from one of them and the saccharine dialogue of the movie. Siobhan closed her eyes, content in the simple intimacy of the moment, feeling safe and loved in Vivian's embrace. The movie faded into background noise as she drifted off to sleep, the rhythmic rise and fall of Vivian's chest a comforting lullaby.
