The office phone rang, startling Marjorie from her busy afternoon. Groggy, she fumbled for the receiver. "Hello the knight nursery?" she mumbled. A cheerful voice responded, "Marjorie, it's Winter! How are you?" Marjorie blinked, trying to focus. "Winter? Oh, hi! I'm okay, just sorting shifts. What's up? How is everything? Hows Aut?" Winter's excitement was palpable. "We're on our way over! Autumn and I want to introduce you to someone."
Marjorie's heart skipped a beat. "You're kidding! You're really coming now?" A chorus of baby gurgles could be heard in the background. Winter chuckled. "Yep, we just got the car packed. Autumn insisted you and Reece be one of the first to say hello." Marjorie sat up straighter, suddenly fully alert. "Oh, that's wonderful my love! I can't wait! Drive safe, okay?" Winter assured her they would, and after a few more excited exchanges, they hung up.
Marjorie sprang into action, tidying up the office so Autumn wouldnt stress even fluffing the pillows on the couch. She couldn't wait to see Winter and Autumn, and of course, their new baby. A wave of warmth washed over her as she imagined holding the tiny infant in her arms. It wouldn't be long now, and she wanted everything to be perfect for their arrival. With a final check of the room, Marjorie settled at her desk , her heart brimming with anticipation. As she sat there she allowed her mind to wonder.
*Flashback - 9th of June 2024*
------------
Winter hesitated outside Marjorie's office door, a knot forming in his stomach. He hated being the bearer of bad news, but Autumn needed Marjorie, and Winter had promised his wife to be the one to tell her. Taking a deep breath, he knocked softly.
Marjorie opened the door, her face lighting up when she saw Winter. "Hey! How did it-" ashe started before noticing the look on winters face, his red blotchy skin and puffy eyes. "What's up?" she asked, stepping aside to let him in. Winter walked inside, his eyes scanning the familiar space, trying to find the right words. "I need to tell you something about Autumn," he began, his voice barely above a whisper. Marjorie's smile faltered, her eyes searching Winter's face for any sign of what was to come.
"She was pregnant, you know?" Winter continued, "Well, she lost the baby, Marjorie. She had a miscarriage and to be honest she really needs you right now." Marjorie's hand flew to her mouth, her eyes wide with shock and grief. "Oh, my god," she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "I need you to go to her. I need to be there for her." Winter told Marjorie quietly as she nodded along to his words.
Winter was relieved that Marjorie understood the urgency of the situation. "She's at home, resting. She was desperate to go to the bar but i told her I was coming to get you and she gave up bickering with me. Are you ready to go?" Marjorie nodded, already moving to grab her coat and bag, her mind racing with thoughts of her best friend. Together, they headed out the door, ready to face whatever lay ahead and support Autumn through this difficult time.
The drive to Autumn's house felt like an eternity. Marjorie sat in the passenger seat, her hands clasped tightly in her lap, her mind replaying every memory she had with Autumn. Winter drove in silence, his eyes fixed on the road, a comforting presence beside him. When they finally arrived, Marjorie practically leaped out of the car, rushing towards the front door. Winter followed close behind, a sense of urgency propelling them forward.
Autumn answered the door, her eyes red and swollen, her face pale. Without a word, Marjorie wrapped her arms around her best friend, holding her tight. Autumn wasnt one for physical contact but she let her self be held as she sobbed into Marjorie's shoulder, her body shaking with grief.
Winter stood back, giving them space, his heart aching for his wife. "I'm so sorry, Autumn," Marjorie whispered, her voice thick with emotion. "I'm here for you. Whatever you need." Autumn pulled back, her eyes meeting Marjorie's. "Just be here," she managed to say, her voice hoarse.
"Winter, go and find Reece." Autumn whispered quietly while holding onto Marjorie. "He's at home today" Marjorie told him softly as she rubbed Autumn's back.
Marjorie stayed with Autumn for hours while winter was gone, sitting on the couch, talking softly, or simply being present. As the day wore on, Autumn seemed to find some comfort in Marjorie's presence. Eventually, she curled up next to Marjorie, her head resting on her shoulder. Marjorie wrapped her arm around Autumn, holding her close. Autumn cuddled into Marjorie, seeking warmth and solace in her embrace. "Have a nap my love, im not going anywhere" Marjorie mumbled as she moved slightly to grab a blanket before pulling it over them both.
Their friendship spoke volumes, a bond that could weather any storm. Winter watched from the doorway, a very small smile on his face, grateful that Marjorie could provide the comfort and support that Autumn needed.
-------------
The office was buzzing with the usual Friday energy, but Marjorie barely noticed as she stared intently at her computer screen. Suddenly, a hush fell over the room, and a gentle coo rippled through the air. Marjorie looked up, her eyes widening in surprise. There, standing in the doorway, was Autumn, radiant and glowing, cradling a tiny bundle in her arms.
"Autumn!" Marjorie exclaimed, jumping up from her desk and rushing over to her friend. "Oh my god, is this...?" Autumn beamed, her eyes sparkling with joy. "Meet Dorian," she said softly, pulling back the blanket to reveal a sleeping newborn.
Marjorie's heart melted as she gazed at the baby's delicate features. "He's absolutely perfect," she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "I cant believe you used his name, my bothers name" she whispered before quickly wiping away the tears that had fallen down her cheeks. "Can I hold him?" Autumn smiled softly and gently placed Dorian in Marjorie's arms. As Marjorie cradled the baby, she felt an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude. "Keep still." Autumn whispered quietly as she picked up a tissue and dried Marjories eyes, fixing her mascara at the same time.
"I just had to come and show you," Autumn said, her voice filled with emotion. "I know how much this means to both of us." Marjorie nodded, her heart overflowing with happiness. "He's beautiful, Autumn," she said, her voice thick with emotion. "You're going to be an amazing mom. You already are." Autumn smiled, her eyes shining with pride. "Thank you, Marjorie," she said softly. "That means the world to me." As they stood there, gazing at the miracle in Marjorie's arms, they knew that their bond had grown even stronger, forged in the fires of sorrow and now illuminated by the light of new life.
After a little while the door opened and in entered Reece and Winter. He walked in, a small, carefully wrapped bundle in his arms. Marjorie looked up from Dorian in surprise. "Winter! What's this?" she asked, a smile already forming on her face. Autumn moved quickly ready to support her son, she knew Marjories reactions were over dramatic. Winter grinned, a hint of nervousness in his eyes. "Everyone, meet our daughter" he announced, pulling back the blanket to reveal a sleeping baby.
The office erupted in coos and awws. Marjorie rushed over, her heart swelling with joy. "Oh, Winter, they're beautiful!" she exclaimed, gazing at the tiny face. Winter beamed, clearly basking in the attention. "We named her Emery," he said, his voice full of love. Marjorie reached out to gently stroke Emerys cheek, completely captivated. For a moment, the world seemed to fade away as she marveled at the miracle of new life. "You have twins" she whispered to Autumn as tears welled up in her eyes. "Hmm" she mumbled while watching her best friend dot on her newborn babies. "I know, don't worry you can stay for the first two nights to help as long as you dont stay awake the whole time trying to get extra baby cuddles." Autumn whispered quietly with a small smirk. "Please." Marjorie mumbled as she moved towards Autumn, resting her head against her shoulder slightly.
