Charlotte sat at the desk in the office, staring at her phone, a knot of anxiety forming in her stomach. The previous evening events still hung heavy in the air. She and Deliah had made up, but the tension between them was palpable. She couldn't shake the feeling that things weren't truly resolved.
It was late in the afternoon when a notification popped up on Deliahs screen: Mia had just messaged her. Mia and Deliah had a history that went right back. Charlotte knew mia loved her, but she felt a jolt of something she couldn't quite name. Jealousy? Anxiety? Maybe a bit of both.
She knew she shouldn't, but she found herself glancing at Deliah's screen as the notification lit up her screen. She was clearly engrossed in a conversation with Mia, giggling at something on her phone. Charlotte felt a pang of unease. What were they talking about? Were they talking about her?
While in the office, she tried to focus on her work, but her mind kept drifting back to the two of them. She imagined Deliah and Mia laughing together, sharing secrets, maybe even talking about the past. The thought made her feel isolated.
She knew she was being irrational. She knew mia loved her with her whole heart but the image of Deliah and Mia together, the ease with which they seemed to communicate, gnawed at her. Charlotte sighed, realizing that the past from the previous day was far from over. The relationship drama was still very much alive.
As the day went on, Charlotte walked down the corridor with purposeful steps as she followed Deliah. "Deliah!" She called, gathering the other womans attention."We need to talk." She continued.
"Oh hey Charlotte, what's up?" Deliah asked in her usual chirpy voice as she turned to look at her. Charlotte rolled her eyes. She wasn't in the mood to have a conversation with her. "Don't "what's up" me! I saw your messages to Mia."
Deliah looked at Charlotte slightly confused before nodding and allowing Charlotte to get on with her point.
"Do you really have nothing to say for yourself? You didn't think I'd find out? We tell each other everything! I get before you both had a thing, but that is over she is mine now!" Charlotte started to shout. "You say that like I dont already know, I know. I just... I wasn't sure how to tell someone that I like them, and Mia is the only one in this nursery that I feel I can talk to, so yes, I messaged her to ask for advice!" Deliah snapped back.
"I know your games! Dont you dare try and steal mia back. She is my forever person, and you can't take that away from me!" Charlotte scolded as she stepped closer. "I dont want your seconds, Charlotte!" Deliah snapped back. Charlotte didn't think the next thing she knew was her hand-made contact with Deliahs cheek.
Of course, this didn't go unnoticed. In the office, fluorescent lights hummed, a monotonous soundtrack to Autumn's workday. She was finally done for the day, and she grabbed her bag, a sense of relief washing over her. As she walked towards the exit, she heard raised voices coming from the corridor. It sounded like Charlotte and Deliah, two of the most hard-working people in the nursery.
Autumn sighed, knowing that whatever the argument was about, it was bound to be a silly disagreement. As she reached the door, a loud slap echoed around them.
Autumn froze. She didn't need to see it to know what had happened. Charlotte had slapped Deliah. Autumn quickly let the door handle slip out of her hand, not really wanting to be involved, but She knew she was needed.
Autumn stormed down the corridor towards the two women, her face set in a grim line. She marched straight towards Charlotte, who tried to walk away.
"Charlotte," Autumn said, her voice sharp. "We need to talk." Charlotte looked up, slightly startled. "Autumn? Hey, what's up?"
