Crying: wailing.
It was 1am and thankfully Fabian was fast asleep in the nursery, but Nikolás just simply wouldn't go down for bed, he wouldn't take his milk and all he did do was scream at the top of his lungs and turn his face red.
Kaia was on her feet, trying to hush him gently and clear any trapped gas he might have.
But it wasn't helping.
"Shh, shh." Kaia soothes softly, her eyes pricked with tears or pure stress and concern. "Niko, please just try to breathe." She urges.
Mapi groans from the bed, where she was unfortunately half awake but couldn't do anything more than what Kaia was already doing.
She had her face buried in her pillow and her eyes closed, so she wasn't quite conscious enough to hear the change from a newborn cry to the staggered, catching of his breath.
Kaia was getting more and more stressed, and her wife's lack of alarm was pissing her off to the point where she was about to snap.
But then Nikolás went silent, and the mother in Mapi shot her straight out of bed; wide eyed.
Kaia had already changed Nikolás's position in her arms and stuck her knuckle in his mouth to encourage him to suckle.
But his mouth stayed open in a silent wail of pure distress, his eyes screwed shut and his face turning bluer and bluer.
"Bebé, what do I do?" Mapi asks, rounding the bed quickly and almost tripping over the corner.
"Grab his legs and push them to his chest." Kaia orders firmly.
Mapi clenches her jaw as she moves closer. "Don't shout at me." She snaps, still pushing Nikolás's legs up to tuck them into his chest.
"I'm not shouting at you, I'm just shouting in general." Kaia retorts stressfully, at her utter limit with the stress in her life right now.
Thankfully, the combination of Kaia's knuckle in his mouth, Mapi pushing his knees to his chest and their petty argument, it makes Nikolás gasp and starts suckling on Kaia's knuckle.
"Bottle, get his bottle." Kaia urges quickly.
"I already am." Mapi retorts, and she was already halfway to the cot where Aurora was swaddled and staring unblinkingly at the ceiling.
She probably wanted to murder her twin brother.
Kaia takes the bottle from Mapi swiftly so she could start feeding Nikolás as soon as possible, muttering a quick but distracted 'thank you' to the Spaniard.
He'd been very temperamental with feeding, so they needed to take their chance while he was willing.
Mapi falls to sit on the bed on Kaia's side next to the cot, her eyes closing with pure fatigue as she listened to Nikolás's little suckles and Kaia's gentle voice speaking to him. "Princesa?"
"Yeah?" Kaia says.
Mapi sighs. "Are you mad at me?"
Kaia rolls her eyes, but it was only at Mapi's dramatics. "Terribly mad." She sarks. "You put two out of three children to bed but couldn't manage the third one."
"Mm," Mapi huffs judgementally. "Divorce me."
Kaia smirks briefly and turns to her wife. "Look me in the eyes and say that again."
Mapi opens her eyes in the darkness of their bedroom, but she could see Kaia perfectly clear in the moonlight. "I'm sorry I can't be more help with everything that's going on." She apologises.
