The rest of that week was filled with painful practices that were equally as hard as the first day, and I didn't see any end to it anytime soon. However, I knew that running that much every day was gonna get me prepared for the track meet - which I was prepared to win - and get me more in shape. Today was that big day to show off what I've practiced. I changed into my track uniform in the locker rooms and I set down my bag. "Heya, P-dot." I heard Amethyst's voice echo the locker room. "Hello, Amethyst." I replied, slicking my hair back, looking in the mirror.
"Just came in here to make sure you're ready for this hell show." Amethyst said, and I rolled my eyes. "I'll have you know that I've been running every day for the past week, and I am as prepared as an eligible competitor can be." I explained, and Amethyst just waved it off. "Yeah yeah, anyways I'm supposed to give this to you, 'cause it didn't seem like you ate or drank too much today." Amethyst explained, handing me a smoothie. "I can't fill up before the 400 meter dash, Amethyst. I'll eat whatever I want afterward." I argued.
However, Amethyst just gave me a look of disinterest and continued to hold the beverage out to me. I stared at her for a whole minute before I finally caved in and snatched the smoothie. "Alright, good luck Peri! Kick some ass out there!" Amethyst told me as she ran out the door waving. "Thanks!" I replied, taking a sip of the smoothie. Oh damn, that's good.
I finished it and did a few stretches out in the field, waiting for the announcements of the 400 meter dash. I noticed that my competitors were running on the track warming up - and they were fast. I felt sweat form on the back of my neck as I started having second thoughts about this whole thing. However, my mind took a turn as I spotted Lapis on the bleachers with Pearl, Amethyst, Garnet, and Squari.
I beamed as soon as I saw Lapis, but glared when I spotted Squari sitting with the group. I then decided to do some over exaggerated warm ups to catch the bluenette's attention. I reached my arms high up above my head and let out a groan as I stood on my tippy toes. I then bent all the way down to touch my toes, and then came up slowly but gracefully. I cracked my knuckles and stretched in a way that flexed my biceps (they were almost non-existent but you get the point). I caught Lapis looking over at me out of the corner of my eye, but as soon as I turned my head to look at her, she jerked her eyes away from me. Hehe...
The coach and athletic director then made announcements to stand at the starting line if you were running the 400 meter dash. I jogged over to the line and looked over at my fellow competitors - they looked tough and fast. The coach of the sprint held an air pistol in his hand as he waited for the signal to start us off. My heart was beating at 100 miles an hour and I already felt my breathing pick up and my legs trembling.
I looked to the right and saw Lapis talking to Pearl and laughing about something. She then turned her head and looked over at me, giving me a half smile. I blushed and smiled back, nodding my head in the direction of the track. I saw the coach nod his head at someone, which means he was ready to start. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes for a moment. You can do this Peridot... you can do this Peridot... do it for Lapis...
All I could hear was the dense beating of my heart and I opened my eyes back up again. "On your mark... " I kneeled down and pressed my fingers on the track floor. "Get set... " I lifted my rear in the air, keeping my fingers on the ground. BLAM!!! No matter how ready I was for that air pistol sound, it still managed to scare the crap out of me.
I felt my legs pick up after the other and I was off, dashing down the track with determination surging through my system. I noticed how everyone was slowly falling more and more behind me, and eventually I was leading place. I continued running as fast as I could, taking breaths for every leg extended.
I heard the voices of Pearl, Amethyst, Garnet, and Lapis cheering my name from the audience. I grinned to myself and ran faster. However, I felt this weird feeling in the stomach, which turned into queasiness. My eyes went wide as I felt bile coming up to my throat, and my running started to slow down. Oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck...
I then came to a full stop as I bent over and hurled all over the ground, earning a series of 'oooooh's' and 'euuughhh's' from the audience. Just when I thought I was finished, I heaved more chunks burning my throat. I heard the runners start getting closer and closer behind me, and I almost died when I saw what happened next.
One of the runners tried to stop herself from running into the puke, but instead skidded into it full speed and slipped, falling forward onto her face with an 'oof'. The next girl on the left of me ran past but freaked out when she accidentally stepped into the hideous puddle. When she tried to shake the vomit off, she tripped over her own foot and landed onto her back.
I looked back down at the puddle of vomit and noticed that it was the same damn color as the smoothie I had drank earlier. I nervously looked around and saw Lapis have this 'oh god that just happened' look on her face. I felt all the heat rush to my cheeks as the audience continued to cringe and laugh and yell. I then spotted Squari shooting me a devilish smirk from while she laughed, and it gave me goosebumps.
Aw shit...
