"Lapis, please just stop. We don't need to be kicked out of here." Pearl stated, taking a small step back. "Pearl... we broke up in 11th grade. How did you and Amethyst get together in 10th grade?!" Lapis asked with an infuriated expression. "wHAT?!" Amethyst and I both yelled in unison. "Th-there must've been a misunderstanding! Amethyst y-you must've gotten the year wrong or something!" Pearl protested, looking over at Amethyst nervously.
"You and Lapis went out?!" Amethyst shouted, looking dumbfounded. I was just as baffled as she was. "How could you do that? You realize how much I trusted you?!" the bluenette asked. "Lapis, I-I didn't..." Pearl trailed off, looking everywhere but Lapis. "I could've spent that whole year searching for someone else. But no. I stayed with you. Thinking you were as committed as I was." Lapis stated, balling her fists.
"We weren't even together for that long, Lapi-" "You broke up with me because you said you weren't ready for a relationship. You said you couldn't handle one at the moment." Lapis grimly cut Pearl off. "And don't say we weren't together for that long. We were together since 9th grade. Of course you lied to my face and ended up being in another relationship anyways." Lapis said in a quieter tone this time.
"You guys knew each other before?!" I asked, and it all felt like some weird dream... or nightmare. "C'mon, Peridot. We're leaving." Lapis deadpanned, walking up to the backpack with Pumpkin sitting inside. She cowered a little as the bluenette picked up the backpack and zipped it slightly. Lapis quickly slung the strap over her shoulder and took my hand. "Aw, c'mon guys! We could figure this out later!" Amethyst whined, standing up now.
"What if it's just a big misunderstanding?! Maybe I did get the date wrong!" Amethyst desperately tried to defend Pearl. Lapis's grip on my hand grew tighter, and I quietly squeaked. I cocked my head to look back at the others, who were all staring at us in awe. Even Garnet pushed her sunglasses down to eye us with her shrunken pupils. Pearl looked anxious, biting her nails as she stared at us with a regretful expression on her face. Amethyst just looked plain terrified.
I turned back around to look at Lapis, whose head was turned away from me. She probably felt a bit humiliated... as well as hurt. "L-Lapis?" I squeaked, trying to keep up with her fast walking as I nearly stumbled twice. She said nothing, and walked straight toward the exit, her hand still gripping mine.
Once we arrived out to the car, I shakily reached into my pockets for my keys. Lapis released my hand, and fastened the strap around her shoulder, holding our whimpering puppy. I finally felt the keys in my left pocket, and pulled them out. I fumbled with them anxiously and unlocked my car. Laz entered the passenger side as I hopped into the driver's seat. We both buckled up, and Lapis placed the backpack down at her feet, reaching her hand into the bag to pet Pumpkin.
Before I started the car, I just placed my hands gently on the steering wheel and sighed. "Lapis... " I looked over at her. "Are you okay?" I asked, scrunching up my eyebrows. Lapis only softly sighed in response, and looked out her window. "Why didn't you ever tell me about you and Pearl before?" I asked, tilting my head sympathetically. "It wasn't really worth mentioning... no point in bringing up the past." she murmured in a tone barely above a whisper. "But you mentioned Jasper..." I said. "Well, yeah... I kinda had to because he's your brother. You deserve to know. He probably wasn't ever gonna tell you." she explained, shrugging her shoulders.
"But I mean... I've been friends with Pearl for a while, now, Lapis. She never even mentioned it either." I said, now staring at the steering wheel. "Our relationship was kind of on the DL in the first place... once we broke up, I figured there was no point in bringing it up." Laz explained. I only lowly hummed in response, furrowing my eyebrows. "You guys just seemed so okay with each other... like casual, you know?" I finally said. "What do you mean?" she asked, turning to me. "I mean... you guys broke up and I'd assume you guys would have a little beef once you saw each other again." I elaborated.
"Mm, no... she broke up with me because she said she wasn't ready for a relationship... and I respected her decision." she sighed through her nose. "... turns out she just didn't love me anymore... I wonder if she ever did..." her voice became very quiet once again. I put my hand on Lapis's shoulder, and eyed her intently. "We'll figure this out, Lapis. Things between you and Pearl will be mended once again. Okay?" I assured.
Lapis stared at me for a long moment, before turning her head away sorrow fully, resting her elbow on the car door. She leaned her head against the window and sighed, furrowing her eyebrows and glaring at the dashboard. My hand slithered away from her shoulder, and it moved its way back to the steering wheel. My eyes darted down, and I groaned as I realized I left my bowling shoes on. Great. We just stole. I pursed my lips and huffed sadly, finally starting the car.
