Chapter 18

FUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKFUCKRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUNRUN. I was running as fast as my legs could go as the bear started charging after me, making grunting noises. "WAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, hoping the others would hear me. "Peridot?!" I could hear Lapis's voice from the campfire. "You okay dude?!" Amethyst's voice called after. "BEAR!!! RUN!!!" I yelled, running right at them. Lapis stepped out of the way and I almost ran into Amethyst. I heard Pearl and Amethyst scream in unison as the bear came out of the tree area. However, the bear ran right past the others and right toward me. Oh come the fuck on. 

I continued running full speed, and going side to side, trying to confuse the bear. I then spotted the heavy cooler fly through the air and hit the bear straight on. It flinched and looked over at where it came from. Lapis stood there staring at the large animal, and I could see fear in her eyes. It started walking toward Lapis, and she booked it. She dashed in the opposite direction straight toward the wood again, going in zigzag lines like I did. Everyone was just screaming as this was all going down. "HEY OVER HERE!!!" I yell, throwing sticks at the bear. 

We just had to keep distracting it until we found a way to get rid of the animal. Garnet just sat in silence watching this. I backed up as the bear came in my direction again, until I felt a weird heat in my foot as I took my last step. I looked down and saw that I stepped in the campfire. Oh great. "GYAAHHHHHHHH!!!!" I screeched, stomping my foot on the ground trying to put my blazing foot out. Sheer pain shot through my foot as it started spreading up to my shin. "PUT IT OUT PUT IT OUTTTT!!!" I yelled, hopping and stomping. The bear was still walking toward me, and all I felt was pure anxiety and panic.

Amethyst then dumped our jug of water onto my foot, and the fire dissipated with a hiss. I let out a sigh of relief, but then held my breath again as I spotted the bear getting closer. Amethyst yelped and bolted to the left and I bolted to the right. Of course the bear follows me, and I run into the direction of the woods again. However, my foot caught onto something on the ground and I stumbled. My foot tangled with the other and I came crashing down into a nearby bush. I laid on my back inside the bush, groaning. "Owww...." I grumbled, putting my hand on the fresh scrape on my arm. The bear's grunting quieted down, and now there was silence except for the rustling trees.

I assumed the bear went back into the woods or someone killed it. I struggled and craned my neck out of the bushes to see where the creature went. He was gone, and everyone was sitting perfectly still, processing what just happened. Squari then comes out from the woods with more branches in her arms. "Hey guys, I'm ba--whoa...what'd I miss?" she asked, raising her eyebrows. She looked over at me, who was still sitting in the bushes in pain. She let out a snicker and dropped the branches into the fire. I was about to get myself out of the bushes, when Lapis came out of nowhere.

"Are you okay?!" she asked, with genuine concern in her sparkling blue eyes. I stared for a moment, but then shook it off. "I'm fine." I deadpanned, getting myself out of the bushes and storming back to the campfire. I felt Lapis's eyes on me, but I refused to look back. This is a nightmare. "Alright guys gather around gather around!" Squari said, as she sat beside the fire. Everyone did so, and I reluctantly plopped down onto the log beside Lapis, who was roasting a marshmallow. Amethyst stabbed three sausages at a time with her stick, and held it over the fire.

"Have you guys ever heard of...the Ningen?" Squari asked in an ominous voice. I rolled my eyes and rested my chin in my hand. "The what?" Pearl asked, raising an eyebrow. "Isn't that just 'human' in Japanese?" Lapis asked, crossing her arms. "Maybe so, but you don't know why it possesses this name. The Ningen is a creature who lingers in the water, ready to snatch anyone it spots with its beady eyes." Squari explained, shaking her hands for effect. "Everything about this creature just seems like a naked human, right? UNTIL you see its noseless and terrifying face, fins, and tail..." Amethyst ate all three of the sausages in two bites with wide eyes. "This cold-blooded killer will drag you to the bottom of the sea with its five long fingers, and eat you ALIVE." Squari said, squinting her eyes and making claws with her hands. 

Pearl gasped, Amethyst 'whoa'ed, Garnet sat in silence, and Lapis looked at Squari with skepticism. "So...my question is...do you guys wanna see if this legend is true?" Squari asked, looking at all of us. "DUDE HELL YES!!!" "No!!!i" Amethyst and Pearl both yelled at the same time, and you could probably guess who said what. Garnet shrugged and crossed her arms, and Lapis just looked over at me. I rolled my eyes and groaned, knowing Squari is just making that story up. "Yo dudes, even better, let's go SKINNY DIPPING!!!" Amethyst suggested, and I flinched at such an activity. 

"Amethyst, that is reckless and foolish." Pearl said, scrunching up her nose. "Come onnnn, P. It'll be hella fun!!" Amethyst protested. Garnet shook her head and sat back "I'm good." she said quietly. "Me too." Lapis said, crossing a leg over the other. "Count me out." I said, looking to the side. "That means you're goin', P." Amethyst said, tugging on Pearl's arm. Pearl scoffed and grunted. "Ugh, I'm gonna regret this so horribly." she grumbled. "Pfft, cowards." Squari said, smirking right at me. "I'll go too." she said, unbuttoning her jeans. "WOO!!" Amethyst cheered, yanking her shirt off and throwing it to the side. Wait, Squari's doing this?! Lapis is gonna see her naked ass?!

"Ya know what? I'm going too." I said, standing up. Oh my fucking god what are you doing. Amethyst's eyes went wide and a huge grin spread on her face. Squari put her hands on her hips and just looked at me with a raised eyebrow. I looked at Lapis out of the corner of my eye, and her expression was shocked. "Out of my way, clods." I said, stepping past them and slipping my t-shirt off.
