-Five days later-
I walked down the hall of the university toward my dorm, and spotted a figure standing next to the door. I cocked an eyebrow, and strained my eyes to take a better look at who had been lingering. I walked further towards her, and she appeared to see me as I was approaching her. She then spun on her heel, and quickly walked away from the doorway, and I scrunched up my eyebrows. "W-wait..." I squeaked quietly, realizing she probably would have ignored me anyways.
I walked up to the door, which was already open, and I peeked in. Lapis' back was facing me, and she giggled as she was playing with Pumpkin on the floor. I turned my head slightly to look back out toward the direction the person had left to. Aquamarine. "Lapis! What the hell are you doing leaving the door open?!" I asked anxiously, entering the room urgently. Lapis then twisted around to give me a half smile. "The room was getting hot! We don't have a lot of ventilation in here, Peridot." she claimed, turning back to the eager puppy.
I closed the door behind me, and huffed loudly. I set my backpack down onto my bed, and squinted my eyes down at the two animals. "How could you act so foolishly, Lazuli?! You realize there's a pitbull out there, just waiting to snatch Pumpkin up at literally any chance she gets?" I scolded. "Take a chill pill, Peri, she's not actually gonna do anything." Lapis argued, and I rolled my eyes. "You need to be more conscious about these things. Especially if you wanna keep Pumpkin." I stated, sitting down on my bed. "Would you rather Pumpkin and I die of heat stroke in here?" she sarcastically asked.
"Yes I would! I'd rather come to restoreable living puddles instead of coming home to a MISSING puddle." I explained, running my fingers through my hair. "Speaking of Pumpkin, something popped into my head today." Lapis said, and I tilted my head. "Notice how they allow service dogs to enter buildings and stuff?" she asked, and I was taken aback for a moment. "...yeah...?" I unsurely replied. "Why don't we just make Pumpkin into a service dog! She'll be allowed in the dorms, and Aqua will be forced to leave us the hell alone!" the bluenette exclaimed. Pumpkin? A service dog? "That's actually...not a bad idea. She's still a puppy. It'll be easier to train her that way!" I responded eagerly.
"Though there was a little milestone in my idea. Don't one of us have to be, like, blind or something?" Lapis asked, and I giggled, shaking my head no. "No, Lapis, they can be used for other disorders as well. For example, your PTSD can be a ticket to receiving a service dog." I explained, and Lapis stared at me for a moment, arching an eyebrow. "Really?" she seemed a bit skeptical. "Yes, yes of course. We could go talk to our friend Steven about it in more detail." I said, and Pumpkin barked. Lapis placed her hand gently onto the puppy's head, and shushed her.
. . . .
"A service dog, huh?" Steven asked, seemingly intrigued. "Yep. It's the only way we could take care of her without getting in trouble." Lapis explained, shoving her hands into her pockets. "Well, normally it takes about two years to fully train a service dog, and since she is still a puppy, this could be a great time." Steven explained. "...however, in order to become a certified service dog, she has to go through all the training. In other words, she won't actually be one until two years from now, if you start the training now." Steven said, folding his hands together shyly.
"Sometimes, it could just be a year and a half." a girl sitting behind the counter added, and I looked over. It was Steven's friend, Connie, who was at the ice skating rink the other day. "Gah, really? We'll already be almost done with college by the time that rolls around." Lapis groaned, looking down at Pumpkin, who she was carrying. "Yeahhh, so just think about, alright guys? You may just have to be careful around administrators and supervisors for now." Steven said, shrugging his shoulders up as he looked to the side. "What happens if they find out you have a puppy?" Connie then asked, and I looked over at the puppy.
"I don't know...we may be expelled, if worse comes to worse. Or they may just force us to get rid of the dog." I muttered, twiddling my fingers together. "Well, we need to get this figured out. We don't have a lot of time before Aquamarine probably squeals about it." Lapis responded monotonously, closing her eyes. "We will figure it out. Like Steven said, we'll just have to be more careful for the time being." I assured. "But how long is 'the time being'? What if we never figure it out? I don't wanna lose the pet that we literally just recently got." Lapis whimpered, and I sighed.
"I know, Lapis. It will be okay. We just have to use our brains and think. Do you think maybe there's someone who could take care of the puppy while we figure things out?" I asked, eyeing Lapis intently. She appeared to be anxious, and her grip on the puppy tightened. "N-no... I have no idea. None of my family would take care of the puppy. They don't even wanna see me." Laz claimed. "Well...my parents probably wouldn't take her...they gave me the boot...which probably means they don't plan on providing for any one else - human or not." I said, thinking deeply.
"What about Squari? You think she might do it?" Lapis asked, tilting her head. "Nah, probably not...she doesn't do crap for me." I replied grumpily. "And since we're together, she probably wouldn't find any worth in doing anything for me." Lapis muttered. "Well, I guess that's everyone I can think of." I groaned, shrugging. "Wait, Peridot..." Steven piped up, "What about your brother? Wasn't he discharged from the hospital recently?" he asked, and Lapis and I both looked at each other.
