Peridot's POV:
"Why can't you just come to me for once? I still don't understand why I'm having to drive all the way to Beach City to see you, mom." I grunted into my phone, looking back and forth between roads. My left hand was gripping the steering wheel, and my freshly brewed coffee was in my right hand. My cell phone kept sliding back and forth across the dashboard as I left it on speaker.
"Peridot, you know I am a very busy woman."
"So am I! You can't use that excuse anymore!"
"Ugh, please quit making this hard for me. Are you almost here?"
"Hhh, yes mom. But I have three other people on hold right now. So are we done talking?"
"I guess so. I'll see you soon."
"'K bye."
I ended the call, rolling my eyes. I was exhausted, due to the lack of sleep I got the previous night. I had a splitting headache, and I groaned out loud again. I then realized that I still had those three other people on hold, and I nearly jumped out of my seat. I reached over to switch to the next person on hold, trying to simultaneously keep my eyes on the road. A few drops of coffee had flew out of my cup and landed on the windshield.
"S-sorry about that, sir. Where were we?" I asked, trying to regain my full composure. This was basically my life from start to end every single day. I can't complain, though. I make damn good money, and it's by doing what I love. Well...sort of. However, today wasn't exactly a day I was looking forward to. I had to drive all the way to Beach City to meet my mother for business. The last time I checked, Beach City wasn't exactly a desirable workplace for her either, yet she stays there. I bet she's still hung up on Blue.
If she regrets dumping Blue so much, why couldn't she just TRY and reach out to her again? Ugh, women. My train of thought was completely derailed, however, as soon as I noticed I had accidentally ran a red light. "Aw, fuck." I quietly cursed, and the startling sound of a car honking at me filled my eardrums. I flinched harshly, and spilled my boiling coffee into my lap.
"wAAAAUGHHH!!!" I wailed, swerving my car. The on-coming traffic had barely missed me, and I exhaled harshly. "WATCH IT, LADY!" I heard a man scream behind me, and I only waved him off. Haven't even been in this city for more than three minutes and I'm already damn sick of it again. I groaned as I looked down at my coffee-stained pants, and realized in order for me to function properly, I was gonna have to stop to buy another coffee.
I passed by the unfortunately familiar buildings, keeping an eye out for the coffee shop. As soon as I spotted it, I pulled over into the parking lot. I needed a new change of pants, as well as a new coffee. I decided on getting a coffee first, because I genuinely didn't care what these beach city citizens thought about me. I can't believe I ever stayed here in the first place, I thought, looking around as I exited the vehicle. I grabbed new suit pants from my trunk, and headed for the entrance.
Seeing a place you called 'home' in the past from the outside outside really changes perspective. What was I thinking? I rolled my eyes one last time before shoving the front door open. The sight of the familiar interior of this very shop nearly made me puke. I decided to call back my clients, since my little incident had cut the calls short.
Lapis's POV:
I could hear the annoying sounds of my canvases sliding back and forth across the trunk as I pulled into the coffee shop parking lot. There was something like eight cars in line for the drive thru, and I couldn't spare any time. This art media project was due in seven hours, and I hadn't even started on it yet, due to finishing other important shit. My brain felt scattered, and I ran my fingers through my ragged hair.
I hopped out of my car and jogged to the entrance of the shop. I kicked open the doors, and exhaled. I looked around, and it wasn't as packed as I expected it to be, which relieved me. I walked up into line of about three people. I shoved my hands into my pockets and tapped my foot frantically. Seven hours...seven hours...seven hours...six hours and fifty-nine minutes. FUCK. I took in the aroma of the coffee in attempts to calm down.
As I deeply inhaled, a certain smell then nearly cut off function to my whole respiratory system altogether. My eyes shot open, and I raised an eyebrow as I couldn't exactly put my finger on what the familiar scent was. It was so familiar...where have I smelled that before? It was a mix of laundry detergent and...package plastic? I couldn't exactly name what it smelled like either, but it was definitely distinguishable.
"No, of course not! Who do you think I am? I'll get it to you as soon as I'm allowed, sir." OH MY GOD. I recognized that nasally voice anywhere. My head shot in the direction of the voice and the familiar smell. There stood a blond woman, holding a cell phone up to her ear. She was wearing a grey pant suit, and her hair was still short, but it was slightly slicked back in a sharp fashion. Her wired glasses were perched on her pointy nose, and she slightly pushed them up again. Peridot.
She looked annoyed to say the least, and her tone of voice was very firm. She meant business. I realized she hadn't noticed me yet, and I also realized that I had been staring way too long. I felt my face heat up rapidly as I turned it away from her quickly. I tried to cover my face with my hand slightly, without trying to seem so obvious in doing so.
Peridot's POV:
"Okay. So what do you want from me, a raise?" I asked the second caller I had left on hold. My head was pounding, and somebody behind me kept on tapping their foot. I internally groaned as I slightly looked up to see who the hell was making that racket. My stomach dropped almost immediately, and it felt as though my heart had stopped beating.
I spotted a glimpse of a very familiar face, before she turned her head and covered her face with her hand. Was that...? No. It couldn't be. "Hello? HELLO!" I ignored the person on the other line as I continued to stare. "Y-yeah great, great talk I'll take note of that. Gotta go now, bye." I said before hanging up almost immediately. I slowly lowered my phone to my chest, and I could feel my harsh thumping of my heart.
The woman peeked through her fingers, and as soon as she noticed I was looking back at her, I could hear her quietly curse. She then lowered her hand altogether, and slowly turned her head to face me. I could feel all of the heat rush to my face, as I noticed all the blood rush to her face. I knew I had recognized that face anywhere. Lapis.
Her hair was a lot messier than I remember it being, and it was still dyed blue. It was the same dark blue, but a lot of her black roots had peeked out from the top. Her clothes looked more like attire you wear to bed, and there were dark circles under her eyes. She looked tired. Very tired. Despite the changes, she still had her same blue eyes. I had no idea what to say, so we both just stood in an awkward silence for a long time.
"Um...hi." I finally squeaked. "Uhh...h-hey." she murmured, putting on a small smile.
