10. New Year's Eve Reflections

It's me again God,

Yesterday evening as we ate fish and chips by the sea after a very hot day, I was surprised at how different the view looked. Clouds had crept across the clear blue sky and sea mist was making it difficult to see the horizon.  As the colour of the sky was reflected in the water just before sunset, it was very hard to determine where the sea ended and the sky began! The fact that the heavens determined the hue of the sea reminded me that I am a reflection of You here on earth.

I marvelled at Your ability to surprise me with yet another version of the same view I have looked at hundreds of times! I also thought about the fact that as this year disappears, I don't know what 2019 will look like —it's like it is covered in mist! As I try to see it in the distance, the way forward is shrouded in mystery! I'm not afraid though, it's actually quite exciting! I love the way the heavens seem to be melded into the earth reminding me that You are here, building Your Kingdom, soul by soul! You are not a distant or far away God but right here with me!

Thank You that I don't need to know what the future looks like but to just rest in Your love and be aware of Your voice leading me.  Thank You that You promise in Your Word that You will guide me and shed light on my feet, then I will not stumble as I continue on my journey in 2019:

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path."
‭‭Psalm‬ ‭119:105‬ ‭NIV‬‬

This verse does not say that that You light up the entire path all at once but there is light for where my feet are currently treading. I just have to trust you with the rest, knowing that as I move forward, You are there, showing me the way! This reminds me of a famous poem written by Minnie Louise Haskins in 1908. It is often quoted on New Year's Eve, as we all stand at 'the gate of the year':

God Knows

And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
"Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown."
And he replied:
"Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.
That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way."
So I went forth, and finding the Hand of God, trod gladly into the night.
And He led me towards the hills and the breaking of day in the lone East.

So heart be still:
What need our little life
Our human life to know,
If God hath comprehension?
In all the dizzy strife
Of things both high and low,
God hideth His intention.

God knows. His will
Is best. The stretch of years
Which wind ahead, so dim
To our imperfect vision,
Are clear to God. Our fears
Are premature; In Him,
All time hath full provision.

Then rest: until
God moves to lift the veil
From our impatient eyes,
When, as the sweeter features
Of Life's stern face we hail,
Fair beyond all surmise
God's thought around His creatures
Our mind shall fill.

What beautiful inspired words for the last day of 2018! I will put my hand in Yours to let me travel when it seems dark. You Know everything —You are the God of hope and I know that peace and joy are mine as I continue to trust You:

"May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit."
‭‭Romans‬ ‭15:13‬ ‭NIV‬‬

I love the word 'overflow' which suggests there will be much more than I could have even asked for! I see hope rising in my heart through the power of Your Holy Spirit, so I have more than enough for the journey ahead!

Thank You for speaking to me today and all the days of this past year! I am so blessed and so confident as I step into 2019 with You! May Your joy and peace in me be evident to all as Your Holy Spirit moves powerfully, bringing increasing measures of hope in every situation!

Until You come again Jesus,
Amen.
