"Have you ever worked at a farm before?" Johanna asked the girl as they were knelt down on a black fabric on the ground meant to keep weeds from growing, and Nick just huffed as she leaned back on her heels. "No, not really, considering I live in New York."
"Pay attention to the plants as we go down the line. You pull the weeds too fast, you could yank out the flowers. You should know this by now." Clarice told her, the blonde across from the other two, and Nick glanced up - all three of them in pants so their knees and skin weren't torn up from the ground and hours kneeling, all three in simple tank tops, Nick wearing a light blue tank top while Johanna was in a black one, and Clarice was in a brown one.
Nick was still in her sneakers, while the other two were wearing two different kinds of work boots.
And the girl let out a huff as she tried to do as told, but Johanna just watched her closely. "You've been here over a week, you should start to lose that lost deer look."
"Is that a warning?" Nick almost tiredly asked, and Johanna just gave a short nod. "It's a fact. And... maybe it is, you need to learn."
"Jo." Clarice sighed as she looked over to the woman, but the other woman shook her head. "No, I'm done taking it easy on her. Hayley wants us walking on eggshells to get her eased into this? Being a kid doesn't change facts, Rice."
"Facts?" Nick just gave a look, "I've been here for almost two weeks now, and this is the longest you've actually talked to me."
Johanna looked up at her, before looking back down to start working again. "I don't speak when I don't have anything to say."
Nick scoffed, looking down as she continued to work. "I've heard that before."
"Yeah?"
"My English teacher, Mrs. Kings." Nick breathed out, shaking her head. "After detention, like, three. She tried to teach me to think before speaking, I'm still struggling with that."
