Noon
[Nina's apartment]
*Hallie, Nina, and Nancy sat on Nina's couch. They were all silent, Hallie and Nina sitting in shock, because Nancy had just told them what Jo said.*
Nina: Are you going to tell Nathan?
Nancy: I have to. Except, I'm just not sure what I'm going to tell him.
Nina: Well, you can't just break up with your boyfriend because your friend isn't over him yet.
Nancy: That's true.
Hallie: Yeah, but you can't just leave your best friend because you're the one who broke girl code.
Nancy: That's also true. So you *she pointed to Hallie* think that I should choose Jo, and you think that I should choose Nathan?
Nina: Oh, well I don't know. I really don't feel comfortable making this decision.
Hallie: Me neither, I mean it's a huge deal.
Nancy: Ugh, no! It is a huge deal, and that's why I need your help deciding!
Hallie: Don't look at me!
Nina: Okay, Nance, you want the truth?
Nancy: Yes, please!
Nina: You want what I really think?
Nancy: So much.
Nina: Okay, here it goes. I think this is a decision that you need to make on your own.
Nancy: What!
Nina: Listen, we can help guide you to your decision, but you need to make this from your heart. And we don't know what your heart is feeling.
Hallie: Yeah, we aren't going to judge you at all. So tell us, what do you feel like you want to do?
Nancy: Well-
Nancy: Deep deep down, what is your heart telling you?
Nancy: It's telling me that... I think I want to... I don't know.
Nina: Oh...
Nancy: It's like, I think one thing, but then I feel sad. Then I switch and think about the other thing, but then I get sad again. Every choice I make feels like the wrong one.
Hallie: Listen, no matter what it's going to be sad. You're losing someone you care about either way.
Nina: You know what I would do?
Nancy: What?
Nina: I'd tell Nathan. Talk it out with him.
Hallie: Honestly, same.
Nancy: Okay, yeah I guess I should do that. Bye guys, thanks for your help.
A Moment Later
[Nathan's house]
*Nancy left Nina's house, drove to Nathan's, and knocked on the door. He opened.*
Nathan: Hey!
Nancy: Hi.
Nathan: What's wrong?
Nancy: Um, nothing.
Nathan: Oh okay, you just seem all melancholy.
Nancy: There's one I haven't heard in a while.
*She dodged his kiss.*
Nathan: Wha-
Nancy: Nathan, I need to talk to you.
Nathan: There it is.
Nancy: No, I'm serious.
Nathan: Okay, what's up?
Nancy: I talked to Jo.
Nathan: Oh! And?
*She stood there in silence while he waited.*
Nancy: She doesn't want me to see you anymore.
Nathan: Oh, what? That's crazy!
*He didn't really believe her, until she looked up with tears in her eyes.*
Nathan: Oh, uh... did you... tell her-
Nancy: I haven't told her anything yet.
Nathan: Oh. Do you know-
Nancy: No. This is the hardest decision of my life.
*He frowned, guilty.*
Nathan: I don't want to separate your friendship.
Nancy: I know.
*She walked toward him and put the palm of her hand on his neck.*
Nancy: But I can't lose you.
Nathan: And I can't lose you.
*He hugged her, and she hugged back. They both knew it could be over for them.*
Later That Day
[Nancy's apartment.]
*Nancy was looking through photo albums of her and Jo. Nathan walked in the door.*
Nathan: Hey.
Nancy: Oh. Hi.
Nathan: What's wrong?
Nancy: Oh, nothing. I was just looking through these old memories.
Nathan: You and Jo.
Nancy: Yup.
Nathan: Are you feeling sad?
Nancy: It hasn't really hit me yet, to be honest.
Nathan: Yeah.
*He looked guilty.*
Nancy: I mean, just to think, one day she can be my best friend, and the next, my ex friend? Oh, gosh. *smiling* I always imagined she'd be my maid of honor. We used to talk about our weddings so much. We even picked out our dresses! I have this beautiful blue hair pin that my mom wore for her wedding. It was going to be her "something borrowed". And it's blue.
Nathan : This shouldn't be so hard on you.
Nancy: But it is.
Nathan: I just wish there was some way for me to help.
Nancy: I know, me too.
Nathan: *impulsively* You know what, I can't do this.
Nancy: What?
Nathan: I'm sorry, but I can't do this. I can't be the person to split you two up. I'm making the decision for you.
Nancy: What? No Nathan-
Nathan: Please, just let this last moment good.
Nancy: Nathan no, wait please!
Nathan: I should go.
*He got up, and she stood up after him.*
Nancy: No! You aren't doing this.
Nathan: What choice do I have?
Nancy: You don't have the choice! It's mine to make, and I've made it! It's you! It's always been you!
Nathan: I'm sorry, I have to go.
*He shut the door behind him as Nancy stood there in disbelief. She closed her eyes in denial as a single tear shed down her cheek.*
