Chapter Seventy: Fractals
One would expect that the team would have some respite from the creatures attacking them. That there was some sort of progression in difficulty, akin to that of a video game, Juda and her compatriots the final boss. That person would be mistaken. The Divine Intervention stood a real threat against the operation, and they had to be dealt with.
Billowing wails of contorted screams echoed down the newly lit hallway. Not from any Pattern-Screamer, but from a man. A creature coming once again, surrounded by a mish-mash of organic and inorganic life, all with the sole intent to end The Divine Interventions existence on this plane.
Flashes of sparkling ignition radiated off of the pristine walls, the reflection of the sparks bursting across Mason and Ja'Kles' eyes. The next opponent came walking down the hallway, talons scraping against the floor, eliciting a halting wailing cry with every twitch of the claws.
A Revaculant, a species of raptor not unlike Protogen. This specific one stood tall at two and a half meters (8.2 feet) in height. It's skin was scaly, arms covered in razor sharp feathers fluttering in the wind, the sharpened edge reflecting in the light. The feathers were dense, and when sharpened, were deadly.
It's spine was hunched over due to the bipedal nature, though the arms suffered no shortage of growth. It wore a leather jacket, with numerous medals and a badge adorning the sleek blackness. Although the Revaculant species is the most free without clothing, it seemed to wear a pair of specially made trousers for modesty.
In each feathered hand it held a ball, with chains wrapped around two of it's five fingers. The Revaculant spun the chains as he walked, the cleavers attached to the end causing the sparks to fly. He radiated a ruby glow, evidently juiced up with Red-Boson Energy, the Boson-Energy of Biological matter.
Before Mason could call out a command, an exhausted scream of frustration boomed from behind him. The Boson Energy around him bloomed faster than it should have as he could track the cold-ignition bullet speed through the air, shattering against the coming attacker.
The speed and velocity of the bullet staggered the opposition, though the casing itself was shattered due to the strength of the Boson-Energy coursing through the creatures' veins. Frost crackled over his skin. It splintered and burst as it attempted to cover him, but the Revaculant simply shook his body to the right, and the crystals stopped forming.
"I can't use my power on him either!" Freefall exclaimed, the one that fired the bullet. Her visor's expression morphed into a target as she took aim and fired once more, the bullet spearing the Revaculants' face in an instant. Ice froze and solidified against his face, but nothing beyond the recoil of being struck by such a blow affected the raptor.
"I was given new life, a new purpose, in this place." The all-too chirpy, cheerful tone of the things' voice caught the entire group off guard, even causing an exhausted Wither to stagger for a moment. It sounded like a childs' voice, high-pitched and unsure of the words being spoken.
A flash of light erupted from behind them all, a spear of pure Hard-Light slicing through the air. Sharpened to the point where it should cut through anything, the light generated by Cardinal was deadly. It spiraled through the air, attempting to sever the Revaculant 's connection to this coil.
And yet, the Revaculant caught the light. Red bursts of energy pulsed off in waves as the Boson injected into him started to procreate. The Revaculant grinned, the flesh guarding the gums and the upper teeth lifting to reveal it's ghoulish grin, "My masters gave me new life, I shall protect that at any cost."
With its grip on the light, the Revaculant yanked the chain forward. Mason used the ambient energy to move and stop the flung protogen before she could be pulled towards the Revaculant, but he felt his arm pop out of it's socket due to the force that she was pulled at. Mason's screams filled the hall with a violent emotion.
