Like My Father - Jax

Within the next couple of months, you moved into the house. You sold the other apartment pretty quickly and settled into your new home. It didn't take long before it felt like you'd always lived there. Unpacking felt like fitting in pieces of a puzzle; finding the perfect place for things to belong. Bucky did all the heavy lifting, and then some. Ever since finding out about the baby, he's practically wrapped you in bubble wrap. In the first week he'd already started reading every single pregnancy and parenting book in the library, writing down milestones in the calendar and constantly holding a hand over your stomach. Most of the time he didn't even realise he was doing it.

You agreed not to tell anyone until the 4 month mark, which was fast approaching. The only people you told before then was your brother and sister, your parents, Bucky's sister and his niece. Not even Sam. Or Alice. You thought that as much as they'd like to know, it wouldn't hurt for them to wait a while, just in case something went wrong in the first trimester. But, nothing did, thankfully.

You're both about to go to sleep as Bucky lies in bed reading, and you get changed into pyjamas. You're individually meeting up with Sam and Alice tomorrow for lunch to tell them the news.

Y/n
"You know I don't think I can hide this bump much longer."

Bucky
"Let me see."

Casually, you turn to the side and fold your shirt over your chest to expose your tummy.
Watching you with quizzical eyes, Bucky looks you up and down.

Bucky
"I don't know, you could blame it on bloating? The boobs are gonna be harder to explain though."

Rolling your shirt back down you squint at him with jestful disapproving.

Y/n
"Of course, that's what you focus on."

Laughing at one another, you walk over to your dresser and pick up a rolled up tape measure. Carefully wrapping it around your torso, you take the measurement just underneath your bellybutton.

Y/n
"Definitely bigger than last week."

Bucky
"You've been keeping track?"

Y/n
"Absolutely! There's no way I'm not scrapbooking this."

You grab your phone from the dresser and zoom in so that your tummy and the tape measure are the only things in frame.
Shaking his head with a smile, Bucky goes back to reading his page, before quickly raising his head back up with a question.

Bucky
"Wait, what else are you keeping track of?"

As you answer, you roll the tape measure back up and walk over to sit on the edge of the bed and take your slippers off.

Y/n
"Umm... symptoms, baby size, various purchases-"

Bucky
"Purchases?"

Y/n
"Yeah, like blankets and baby grows and stuff."

Bucky
"Okay, what else?"

As you climb under the covers, you notice him completely put down his book as he pays you full attention.

Y/n
"If you must know, you."

Bucky
"Me?"

Y/n
"Yeah, your journey of 'oh shit I'm a dad'."

Bucky
"Journey??"

You laugh at him, thinking it's a joke. Looking back at him as you begin to finally settle down fully, your expression drops at his genuine question.

Y/n
"Seriously? You haven't noticed you've been acting differently?"

Sweet Baby - Bothnia

Shaking his head in confusion, you walk over to your laptop and bring it over to the bed. Clicking on a file labelled 'super dad', you pass over the computer to his lap. He flicks through the never ending photos of him, none of which he knew existed. Some show him with various boxes belonging to a car seat, mobile, crib etc. Even a couple of him trying to set up the aforementioned crib. He smiled with a squint as he flicks through, but you stop him at one specific photograph.

Y/n
"Oh this one's my favourite."

The photo is of Bucky casually looking to the side, at a shop. You took it a week or so after you told him you were pregnant, when you were shopping for a letter box to christen the house with. Across from the home-wears store you were looking in, was a BuyBuyBaby outlet. The windows were lined with baby grows, nursery furniture, bottles etc. All he was doing was looking, his expression unreadable, except for a small smile in the corner of his mouth.

Bucky
"How did you take these without me knowing?"

Y/n
"Well despite what you like to believe, you're not that hard to sneak up on."

After closing down the laptop and leaning over you to put it on the floor on your side of the bed, Bucky stops short to be hovering over you. Resting on his metal arm and holding your side with the other, he leans down into a soft kiss.

Bucky
"If those photos ever leave this house, I will go all winter soldier on your ass."

Y/n
"Bullshit."

Bucky
"Watch me."

Cupping your hands on the side of his face you bring him down for one last kiss before you both reach over to your bedside tables and turn off the lamps. Joining back together, you turn your back to Bucky as he closes the distance between you, his hand finding its natural resting place on your stomach.
