Nervous - Shawn Mendes

The next morning, you went to lunch with Alice to tell her about the pregnancy. When you get to the café, she's already waiting for you inside. Looking down at your slightly protruding stomach, you smooth down your shirt and walk into the building. You're greeted with a wide smile from Alice as she rises from her seat and embraces you in a hug.

You make it through the meal with general chatter, holding back until you can tell her over last drinks.
Once your plates are taken away, Alice sits forward in her seat and stares at her fidgeting fingers, nervously chewing her lip.

Y/n
"Alice, you okay?"

Only looking at you for a moment, she responds with an unconvincing quickness to her tone.

Alice
"Mhm."

Within a moment a waiter comes over with two champagne flutes, full of bubbling liquid.

Y/n
"Oh, sorry, we didn't order these."

Alice
"I did."

After setting the drinks down on the table, the server leaves and you give Alice a confused look, waiting for an explanation.

Alice
"I'm getting married."

Your mouth falls agape and you almost jump out of your seat. Grabbing her wrists as you lurch towards her in shock.

Y/n
"Oh my god! You an- and Dianna??"

Alice
"Yup!"

Y/n
"That's incredible! Who asked who??"

Alice
"It was a mutual thing but I may have been the one to start the conversation."

Y/n
"Alice! I'm so happy for you!"

Clasping your hands in hers, Alice smiles at you with a mischievous edge.

Alice
"I also wanted to ask you, if you'd be my maid of honour?"

Y/n
"Are you kidding me?! I would have been offended if it were anyone else!"

You grab her shoulders and pull her into a hug over the table.

Alice
"Is that a yes?"

Y/n
"Of course it's a bloody yes!"

Drawing away from each other, you fall back into your seats, still beaming.

Alice
"Then allow me to make a toast!"

Raising her glass in the air, you follow suit but prepare to lower it back down without taking a sip.

Alice
"I couldn't imagine doing this without you at my side. To getting me hitched!"

Taking a large swig from her glass, Alice side eyes you as you just stare at yours.

Alice
"What's wrong?"

Y/n
"Uh, I can't drink."

Alice
"Why, you driving?"

Y/n
"No, I walked."

Alice
"Are you doing one of those health kicks again? It's a special occasion, I think you can make an exception!"

Sighing quietly whilst raising your eyebrows, you prepare to put her out of her misery.

Y/n
"This is the reason I wanted us to meet up for lunch. I, um-"

Alice
"Oh my god, are you dying??"

Y/n
"I'm not dying!"

Alice
"Then what's the problem??"

Looking away to take another sip, she laughs at herself as she raises the glass to her mouth.

Alice
"It's not like you're pregnant or anything."

Gone, Gone, Gone - Phillip Phillips

You fall silent as you nervously grin at her, waiting for her eyes to fall back on you. It doesn't take her long to notice your unusual quietness and abruptly put her glass down.

Alice
"No!"

Y/n
"Yes..."

Alice
"You're-"

Y/n
"I'm pregnant!"

Alice
"Wha- bu-... how long have you known?? Does Bucky know??"

Y/n
"I've known for a couple months, so yes Bucky knows."

Alice
"And you didn't tell me!? How far along are you??"

Y/n
"I'm about 4 months gone and I only waited this long to tell you because we didn't want to cause a big fuss."

Alice
"Y/n, that's exactly why you should have told me!"

Thwacking your shoulder lightly with the back of her hand, Alice sits back in her seat.

Y/n
"You realise you just assaulted a pregnant woman?"

Slapping her hand across her mouth, Alice goes wide eyed at the realisation, before you both burst into hysterical laughter.

Alice
"When the hell did we grow up??"

Y/n
"Okay now that's offensive, take it back."

Alice
"I'm engaged. You're knocked up... and happy about it."

Sliding your flute towards Alice with one hand and picking up your water with the other, you gesture towards another toast.

Y/n
"To being adults."

Following your lead, Alice raises her glasses to yours before you go to take a gulp. Her mouth on the edge of one glass, she manages the last word to make you squint at her over the edge of yours.

Alice
"I better be god mother or I'm suing."
