"Kuch kaam hai aai?" Naina asked her mother with a calm expression.

"Haa, yeh lo." Sarita handed over a mild brown envelope to her daughter.

Naina unpacked the paper and peeped into the envelope to find a bundle of Indian cash.

"Yeh paise kiske liye?" Naina asked her with confusion in her voice.

"Woh sameer ki aai ko de dena tum." Sarita replied to her normally.

"Haa woh main de dungi par kiske liye?" Naina questioned her again, and this time Sarita had to answer her daughter - "Un logo ne jo bhi tumhare liye mehengi saree, thode bahut gehne laye hai uske liye paise hai."

"Excuse me?" Naina furrowed her eyebrows at her mother and glanced at the envelope in her hand.

"Kya? Main nahi chahti unhe koi bhi financial issue ho yeh sab ki wajah se." Sarita spoke thoughtfully.

"Aapko kya lagta hai aai main yeh paise unhe dungi toh woh chup chap le lengi?" Naina said with a concealed taunt in her terse tone.

"Nahi legi toh zabardasti de dena, par yeh paise un tak pahuch jane chahiye hai," Sarita commanded her daughter with an austere visage.

"Main nahi dene wali yeh paise kisi ko bhi." Naina angrily kept the cash envelope in her mother's palm.

"Kyun?" Sarita questioned her.

"Kyuki aap indirectly unki insult kar rahi hai aai. Yeh paiso ka dikhawa Sameer ki family ke saamne karne ki zarurat nahi hai, aur rahi baat financial issue ki toh mera Sameer is qabil kabka ban chuka hai ki woh aise chote mote kharche utha sake." Naina answered her mother in a stern voice with a wavering pride in her orbs.

"Bala, tum nahi samjh rahi ho, shadi me bhi bahut kharche hoge, shadi ke baad kharche hoge, woh akela kaise manage karega itna sab kuch? Shadi toh hum kar lenge par baki sab sangeet, reception, woh toh unhe hi rakhna padega na." Sarita tried to convince her miffed daughter in a soft voice.

"Woh akela kyun manage karega sab aai? Kya uski maa ne use itna padha likha isliye banaya hai taki woh apne itne saalon ki saari ki huwi savings humari shadi me kharch kar de? Main khud itna acha kamati hoon, main bhi contribute karugi na humari shadi me, kyuki shadi hum dono ki ho rahi hai sirf uske akele ki nahi, toh zimmedari bhi hum dono milkar uthayege." Naina told the aging lady rationally who was precisely behaving like those typical Indian mothers who believe that all the wedding expenses should be given by men because they are responsible to pay for it irrespective of the woman earning pretty good who can easily contribute to the organized events.

"Yeh sab filmon me acha lagta hain beta, real life me aurat chahe kitna bhi kama le...jab baat shadi me kharch karne ki aati hain toh in mardon ka ego hurt na ho isliye yeh khud sara kharcha uthate hain, phir chahe uske liye unhe loan hi kyu na lena padhe," Sarita replied to her daughter with a knowing look, and Naina frowned at her mother's backward thinking.

"Come on Aai, aapke itne educated hone ka kya faida jab aapki thinking itni purane zamane wale logo jaisi hai? Do you really think Sameer would mind if I would contribute my part of the money for the wedding? Do you really think Sameer itna purane khayalaat wala hai? Like seriously?" Naina questioned her mother with displeasure in her tranquil tone.

"Agar aisa hai toh ek baar yeh sab discussion kar lena Sameer se, agar use koi problem nahi hai tumhare paise kharch karne se toh achi baat hai warna." Sarita stopped, knowing her daughter is smart enough to understand what she wanted to say, and Naina hummed, saying - "Yes, fine...abhi yeh paise apne paas hi rakho aur yeh baat bhul se bhi Sameer ya uski aai ke saamne mat karna please."
