Logan glanced down at his phone for the fifth time, tapping his legs anxiously. Three hours had passed since Aaron had left his dorm room and he still hadn't called or messaged him. His cellphone rang and he scrambled to answer it without looking at the screen.
"Aaron, where are you?"
"Logan, this isn't Aaron."
Logan pulled the phone from his ear to look at the screen. It was Emma calling him. He was still mad at her for snubbing him during their last conversation but he couldn't ignore her calls.
"Emma, why are you calling so late?"
"April's funeral is next week. Would you be able make it."
Logan hated funerals. Even after his family was killed, he had refused to attend the funeral because it had been overwhelming at that time. Now it was two of his friends that were killed.
"I'll be there."
"Logan, I'm sorry about what I said last time."
"No harm done. I have to go." Logan hung up on her abruptly when he saw Aaron's name flashing on the screen.
"Aaron, what's taking you..."
"This isn't Aaron. It's Kyle. I need your help."
"What's going on? Where is Aaron?"
"Can you meet me downstairs?"
"How do I know you're telling me the truth?"
There was a moment of silence.
"Logan," Aaron's voice sounded in his ear. "I need you to trust me and come downstairs."
"I'll be right there."
Logan jumped from his seat, ran to his bedroom to change his clothes, grabbed his keys and rushed down to the lobby. He spotted a gray SUV parked in front of the entrance to the building. It was already late so there were no students outside.
Logan walked up to the SUV and the door swung open revealing Aaron leaning against the seat.
Aaron turned his head to look at him with a smile etched in pain.
"He'll be fine." The driver's side door opened and the guy from the diner strode around to where he was standing. He reached in to help Aaron out of the vehicle then wrapped his arm around his shoulders. Logan closed the door then looked around to make sure they weren't being watched.
On the elevator ride up, Logan would glance at Aaron to make sure he was really alright. He had no idea what happened or how badly he was hurt but it scared him. The doors opened and they left the elevator to walk to his door.
Logan unlocked the door and allowed them to ender first before closing and locking the door.
Aaron was led to the couch to lie on his back.
"What happened to him?" Logan finally asked now that they were in a secure place.
"He was shot."
"Why didn't you take him to the hospital?" Logan asked in disbelief.
"Too many eyes."
Aaron opened his eyes to stare at him. "Logan this is Kyle."
"It's officially nice to meet you." Kyle said but he was completely focused on Aaron. "I'll be staying here."
"Kyle you don't have to stay." Aaron tried to get up from the couch but Kyle would put his hand on Aaron's shoulders preventing him from moving.
"It's not a negotiation."
Logan didn't like the way Kyle would keep touching or staring at Aaron. It could be platonic but he had this feeling Kyle didn't think of Aaron as just a friend. He walked towards the couch and knelt down next to Aaron.
"How are you feeling?"
"I'm good. We already went to a hospital."
"The bullet didn't hit any artery. It went clean through."
"Why didn't you stay at the hospital?"
"It would be a waste of time. Besides the doctor told me I could go home."
Logan highly doubted any professional doctor would let him leave the hospital with a fresh bullet wound.
"Where did you get shot? Let me see."
Logan backed up a little so Aaron could put his legs down and sit up.
He placed a hand on Aaron's knee, unknowingly rubbing soothing circles on his leg. Aaron removed his jacket then his shirt, showing Logan his shoulder wrapped with gauze bandages.
"See, no big deal."
Logan lightly touched his wrapped shoulder. His fingers ran up his arm, down his chest to rest on his stomach.
Aaron's stomach quivered at his touch but Logan pretended to be oblivious to his reaction. He stroked the flesh above the hem of his pants, fighting back a smile when Aaron's hands fisted.
"How did you get shot?"
"The place we went to had a couple of bugs." Kyle chipped in as he took a seat.
Logan frowned at him. "What do you mean bugs?"
"It's late now. We'll talk about this another time. We should get some sleep." Aaron started to get from the couch.
When Kyle moved to get up, Logan quickly rose to his feet to help Aaron to his feet. He wrapped an arm around his waist, placed Aaron's arm across his shoulder and holding it in place with his other hand.
Supporting Aaron's weight, he walked towards the bedroom without staggering.
"Do you need any help?"
Logan shooked his head, "No, I can manage."
Kyle stepped back with his hands in the air. "Goodnight, Aaron."
"See you in the morning, Kyle."
Logan pushed his door open and helped him inside. He turned to close the door but paused when he saw Kyle standing staring at him.
Kyle gave him a salute before turning away.
What was his game?
