Aaron woke up to his phone ringing on the nightstand. He grabbed the phone, answering on the third ring.
"What's up Harold?"
"Is Logan there with you?"
"Yeah, he's here. Why?"
Aaron swung his feet to the floor and stood up. He saw Kyle's eyes open to stare questioningly at him but he shook his head to show that he had no idea what was going on. He pointed his head toward the living-room and Kyle gave him a nod.
"What's going on, Harold?"
"Someone set the diner on fire and the owner is missing."
"Was it random?" Aaron knew the answer but he still had to ask.
"I don't think so. We found a body but this person has a petite built."
"Where was the body found?"
"Behind by the dumpster."
"How was she killed?"
"She was shot twice."
"We'll be there in a few minutes." Aaron glanced up at Kyle as he ended the call.
"Was that Harold? What happened?"
"I'll tell you on the way. We need to go down to the diner." He walked back to he bedroom to change his clothes
"Logan, wake up?" Aaron gently shook his shoulder.
Logan opened his eyes to look up at him. "What is it?" He asked with a yawn, rubbing his eyes sleepily.
"We have to go out for a bit."
"Did something happened?" He asked sitting up on the bed.
"I'll tell you everything when we get back. Okay?" Aaron kissed him then stepped back when Logan glanced at Kyle.
"We'll be back." Kyle smiled at him before he bent forward to kiss him on the mouth.
Logan smiled up at them. "I'll see you both later."
Aaron sent a quick message to Kaia while leaving the apartment. They rode the elevator down to the lobby and exited the building, heading to Kyle's vehicle. During the drive, Aaron told Kyle about the fire at the diner and the dead body.
Kyle parked his vehicle further down the street from where the perimeter was cordoned off but Onlookers were standing to the side, straining to get a glimpse of the scene.
Aaron spotted Harold talking to a firefighter, so they headed towards him.
"We got here in time. Any later and the whole building would have burned to the ground."
Aaron recognized the voice instantly, it was the same firefighter from earlier.
"We meet again."
The firefighter removed his helmet then he held out a hand to Aaron. "I'm Mitch Jefferson. Captain of Blackwall Station 19."
"I'm Aaron and this is my partner Kyle." Aaron introduced, shaking his hand.
Kyle nodded his head but kept his hand folded across his chest watching Mitch.
"Did you find anything inside?" Aaron could sensed Kyle's dark mood.
"There was no body found in the diner during the search."
"What about the other body?"
"In the alley at the back of the diner."
Harold led them around the back where they emerged into the alley to find Alex already there kneeling next to the body.
"What have we got here?"
"She was shot twice in the back."
Kyle frowned down at the body when he recognized her face. He had the same class with her. Or at least he did.
Logan didn't know her. Why was she killed and brought here to be found?
It didn't make any sense. Wait, was the fire caused by someone else? A chill went down his spine. Was this connected to him? If so, that meant they were targeting him.
"She looks to be around eighteen. Her hands and feet were bound." Alex stood up. "I'll let you know my findings when I'm done."
Harold sighed, "I'll meet you both back at the office." He shoved his hands into his pocket before walking away.
The body was lifted onto the gurney and wheeled away. Aaron gazed reflectively at the coroner's van as it drove off.
"What is it?"
He turned to look at Kyle standing behind him. Should he tell him? Kyle was already possessive towards him.
If he shared his thoughts, Kyle would definitely take it to the extreme.
"Nothing. We should go to the coroner's office." He shook his head when Kyle opened his mouth. He knew that he wanted to ask more questions but now wasn't the time or place.
Aaron saw Kyle stiffened when Mitch made a beeline in their direction. He pulled out a small card and handed it to Aaron. "In case you need any help."
Oh, okay.
"Thanks, Mitch." Aaron took the card and put it into his pocket without looking at Kyle.
"I'll see you around, Aaron."
Mitch gave him a small salute before leaving him alone with Kyle. It was like Deja vu all over again.
"You know, it's getting real hard trying to control myself from knocking someone out."
"He was just being nice."
"Nice, my ass." Kyle scoffed.
Aaron pushed pass him to head towards the car. He opened the door and got in to wait for Kyle
"You shouldn't be jealous of everyone that talks to me." Aaron told Kyle when he entered the car.
Kyle slammed the door shut, turning the key in the ignition and pulled out from the curb.
"I'm not jealous of everyone that talks to you. It irritates me that they think you're single." Kyle rev the engine, driving fast down the empty street.
"Well, I'm not single. We can't let anyone know until everything is done."
"I know that."
The vehicle screeched to a halt in front of the building. "Then don't let it bother you. Trust me, like I trust you."
"It's you I trust. Not them." Kyle stated.
Aaron put a hand over his, caressing the skin. "Good."
