Aaron dropped to the ground, holding his arm. He glanced down at his bleeding arm, before pulling his phone out of his pocket and dialing Kyle's number.
"Aaron, where are you?"
"I'm at the back of the building. I'm heading down the alley."
"I'm heading your way now. Don't go anywhere. Wait for me, please."
Aaron looked up as he heard footsteps overhead. He knew his mom's men were still somewhere in the building but he couldn't wait for them.
The alley had only two lights, making it easier for him to hide behind the dumpster.
"I'll wait for you."
"Good."
"He went out the window!" A voice shouted from above his head.
"Get out there and find him."
Metal groaned under the weight of men climbing onto the fire escape.
Aaron looked up as the men descended the ladder. He couldn't stay here. He raised gun and fired at the guy taking the lead. The fell over the edge and landed on top of the dumpster.
"There he is!"
Aaron dodged behind the dumpster as they began firing at him. The sounds of the bullets striking the metal rang in his ears.
"Don't hit him."
They stopped firing and resumed coming down the ladder. Aaron sprinted down the alley to the opposite end of the building. His legs strained as he exerted more to put as much space between him and those guys.
His phone rang out and he quickly answered.
"Kyle meet me at the end of Barbers Street."
"Shit...Aaron."
"They were after the black metal box."
"Do you have it with you?"
"No, I don't have it. I hid in my apartment."
"Where is it?"
"It's in the safe behind that painting you bought me when we graduated from the academy. The passcode is your birthday."
"Okay...I'll get the box then meet you on Barbers Street."
Aaron dashed out the alley, hiding the gun under his jacket as he mixed in with the crowd. He kept his head forward as he walked among the crowd.
He pressed harder on the as he felt the blood trickling down his arm.
It was a good thing he was wearing dark clothes. The sign for Barbers Street showed up ahead and his footsteps hastened. He switched over to the sidewalk when the crowd started to thin out. He saw the traffic light on green and he picked up the pace.
As he neared the traffic light it turned red before he could cross the street. He glanced over his shoulder but couldn't see anyone following him. He didn't want to take the chance of being seen.
The street was well-lit with streetlights so he had to walk where there was a limited amount of light.
Aaron stood staring at the traffic light, counting the seconds in his head until it turned green. He glanced over his shoulder and spotted two of the men walking in his direction but they hadn't seen as yet.
"Come on...come on." He mumbled under his breath. A huge sigh of relief pass his lips when the light finally turned green. He wasted no time crossing the street.
His pulled his phone out of his pocket when it started ringing.
"Kyle, I'm just passing the traffic light."
"I'm standing in front of the printery."
Aaron reached the sign and glanced around looking for Kyle.
"Aaron, I can see you. Stay there."
"Okay," Aaron leaned against the sign, his body tired and aching.
He heard footsteps coming closer to him and reached for his gun just as a hand touched his shoulder.
"Aaron, it's me. Don't shoot."
Aaron rushed forward and hugged him, burying his face against Kyle's chest. He knew they had to get the hell out of here but he needed to feel his embrace.
Kyle returned his hug, pulling him tighter against his body.
"I got you...I got you."
Aaron looked up at him. "We should get out of here."
"Come on. I'm parked on the side of the street."
They made their way to Kyle's vehicle. Aaron got in the passenger seat and closed his eyes.
"You're bleeding..."
"It's fine...I'm fine."
"Aaron, it's not fine."
"Let's get out of here. Then we can talk about my injury." He couldn't think about his injury right now.
Kyle started the engine and drove off in the direction of the hospital.
"Your mom's men are right behind us."
"What about the guy that was in the apartment?"
"He's in police custody."
"There's a dead body behind the apartment building." Aaron told him.
"It's already taken care of."
"What did you do with the box?"
"It's under the backseat."
"Keep it with you for now." Aaron still had his eyes closed. He was too tired to attempt to open them.
"Aaron, I need you to stay awake."
Aaron heard Kyle muffled words coming from afar. He tried to open his eyes but they felt as though someone had glued them shut.
Fingers tapped lightly against his face. "Aaron, I need you to stay awake!"
