Aaron grabbed the soaked saline cloth and gently dabbed the area around his stitches. After applying healing ointment, he put on a new gauze bandage. Tying the spoiled bandages in a bag, he dropped it into the garbage bin.
He was able to rotate his shoulder more since medication he was taking helped to reduce the pain. He picked up his shirt from the bed and slipped it on. Logan had fallen asleep earlier in the other room. He glanced at the clock above the door; it was almost twelve.
Knowing Logan would be awake soon, he went downstairs to prepare lunch. On the way down the stairs, he heard his phone ringing, so he beelined to the counter to grab his phone. He smiled when he saw his mom's name flashing on the screen.
"Mom, I was just about to call you. Is everything good at home?"
"We're good. Your dad was worried about you."
"Why didn't he call?"
"You know how your dad gets. Over dramatic about things. It would be a headache trying to calm him down."
"Tell him not to worry. I'm fine. This will all be over soon."
"Your father is a stubborn man. He wants to see for himself that you are really fine."
"Dad, I know you are listening. You don't need to worry. I'm safe." Aaron put the phone on the speaker, making it easier for him to move his hands.
"How are things going with your job?"
Tiring. "Things are fine. I'll tell you all about it later." Aaron peered at the screen. "Dad, stop hiding. Let me see your face."
The camera shifted to reveal his dad's face. "I wasn't hiding."
"Dad, I know you're going to worry regardless but I hope you don't stress yourself too much."
"Keep yourself safe then I won't stress myself."
"What are you cooking?" His mom asked.
"Spaghetti Bolognese."
"Why are you making your special dish?"
"I haven't been able to cook a lot because I've been busy with work. I just decided to make it today."
"Are you alone?" The question was asked suddenly that Aaron had to pause for a second.
His parents already knew what his undercover job entitled. They knew the person he was protecting but not the whole reason of why he chose to do this job. Growing up, Aaron had never indicated any interest in another person until Kyle. He had kept their relationship platonic because he had been afraid to lose him. Then he met Logan and fell in love with him. He had always had feelings for Kyle but never thought to act on it until Logan told him that it was okay with them being in a relationship.
"No, I'm not alone."
"Okay."
He smiled when his parents accepted his answer without asking for more details.
"Make sure you eat properly and take care of yourself. Do your job but don't get hurt."
Too late. He heard Logan's footsteps coming down to the stairs. "Mom, dad I got to go. I'll call you tomorrow."
"Okay honey. Take care."
"I will." He hung up the phone just as Logan came into view.
"Whatever you're cooking smells really good."
"Have a seat." Aaron waited for him to sit before placing the plate in front of him. "Do you still want me to teach you to cook?"
"Yeah. It's not a bother, is it?"
"No, it's not. I'll teach you later."
"What now?"
"I'm going to teach you how to shoot."
"Why?"
"It's something that you should know how to do." In case I'm unable to protect you.
"Is it hard?"
"It might seem overwhelming at first because of your inexperienced handling a gun. But with training and practice you will be able to handle a gun."
"Are you really sure about this?"
"There's nothing to worry about. I already have everything we need."
"If you think it's better for me to know then I will learn to shoot."
"Good. We'll start practicing in an hour."
An hour later, Aaron was standing with Logan at the outdoor shooting range he had built. He stooped down and pulled the ear and eye protection gears from the bag.
"It's always important to wear protection when shooting." He told Logan while helping him with the gear. "I'll show you a few pointers then I'll let you practice on your own."
Aaron grabbed a gun from the table and set himself up to take his shot. He had to be extra careful with his shoulder. He aimed and fired at the target. When the gun clicked, he placed the gun down then walked over to the target practice sheet. He brought the sheet over to show Logan.
Logan let out a whistle when he looked down at the sheet. In the middle of the sheet was a big hole.
"I don't know much about shooting but I've never seen someone shoot so accurately."
"Stand here in the same spot." Aaron placed the sheet down to reload the gun. "Your grip is very important."
Aaron showed him the proper stance and how to hold the gun.
"Place the trigger between the pad of your pointer finger and the first knuckle. This will help you pull the trigger straight back, without pushing your shots left or right of your target."
"It's a little heavier than I thought it would be."
"Grip the gun with both hands and keep your arms straight. Don't bend them." Aaron stood next to him while giving him instructions. "Control your breathing and keep calm."
Aaron watched Logan intently. "I'm going to tell you when to shoot. Give me a slight nod when you're ready to go."
Logan's head dipped a bit, signaling to Aaron he was ready.
"Okay. Ready...aim and fire."
Logan pulled on the trigger.
