"We need to check on Carl."
"Do you think he's alive?"
"Hopefully, he was smart enough to get out of here before they found him."
He heard the sound of sirens from outside, drawing near to the house.
They reached outside just as three police cars pulled up in front of the house. A few minutes later, the coroner's van appeared.
After telling them where he found the body, he beckoned two of the cops over to his side.
"I need you to check on the owner of this address."
"Yes, Sir."
"I want you to take precautions. Call for backup if needed."
Harold watched the police car until it disappeared from his sight.
"What now?"
"I can't wait any longer. We need to visit Freida's psychiatrist."
"Do you really think this will help her to remember?"
"Yes, I do. There's no other option."
Harold's phone rang and he quickly answered. "Miles, I'm busy at the moment..."
"The missing diner owner."
"What about her?"
"She's here in the building."
"What? Is she okay?"
"I think you should head over here right now."
"I'm on my way. Don't let her leave your sight."
Harold hung up the phone then turned to Tim. "We need to get to the department right now."
"What's going on?"
"The lady that owns the diner is alive."
They piled into the car, tires squealing as he sped away from the house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Aaron stared out the window at the traffic. Half an hour stuck in traffic wasn't how he imagined spending his day.
He glanced over at Kyle. "I told you that we should have taken a different route."
"I'll listen to you next time."
Kyle had basically dragged him from the apartment to the hospital for a full checkup. His injuries, except for the one on his back has had healed.
The bruises would disappear in a day or two. The doctor had given him a clean bill of health.
"What did I miss out? Tell me in full details."
He listened as Kyle filled him in on everything that happened.
"This lady doesn't remember how he looks?"
"No," Kyle tapped his fingers on the steering wheel. "Harold is making her see a psychiatrist."
"She agreed to get hypnotized?"
"Yes, she did."
"What about this guy working at the retirement home?"
"He was there to keep an eye on her."
"What about the doctor?"
"We haven't been able to get in contact with him. Harold went out with your dad to his home."
Aaron wasn't surprised. His dad wasn't the type of person to sit back and do nothing.
"If this doctor is dead, those two are next."
"Why haven't you asked me about Pawel?"
"I'm not surprised that he tried to protect me. I always saw him with Brett's group but he kept to himself."
"If he hadn't recorded everything, we would have arrested him for a crime he didn't commit."
"I'm glad he's safe. I've always liked him."
"I don't like hearing you talking about another guy."
Aaron bit his lip to keep from smiling. "I should get to know him better."
"You don't need to know him better."
"It's not gonna having another friend."
"You don't need any more friends."
Aaron couldn't hold it any more, he burst out laughing. "Kyle, there's no need to be jealous."
"I'm not jealous."
Kyle's phone rang interrupting their little banter.
Aaron turned his head to look out the window. The traffic had finally started to flow faster.
"I can't believe she's alive "
Aaron's head head twisted to look at Kyle.
"Sure, I'll let them know." Kyle said before hanging up the phone.
"What's going on? Who's alive?"
"The lady that owns the diner. She showed up at the department."
"Really?"
"Yeah...he wants me to tell Logan and his family."
"Don't say anything to them."
Kyle looked at him, "Why?"
"She suddenly shows up after being missing for two months."
It seemed odd to him that she would suddenly show up out of the blue.
"Aaron, I don't think you should keep this from Logan."
"I'm not trying to keep it from him. I just want to be certain that it's not a trick."
"This woman has known Logan for years. Why would she hurt him?"
"Kyle, I don't think..."
"Aaron, not everything that happens have an ulterior motive behind it."
"I know that...but I don't think..."
"Aaron...stop it. I'm going to tell Logan."
Aaron stared at Kyle silently. It was the first time Kyle had dismissed his thoughts without listening to the reasons behind it.
"Aaron, I'm sorry..."
"It's fine." Not really. Thankfully the traffic cleared up. He kept silent for the rest of the ride, refusing to look at Kyle.
The jeep pulled to a stop in front of the apartment building and Kyle shut off the engine. Aaron got out the vehicle without a word. No words passed between them during the ride to his floor. When the elevator doors opened, walked out, with Kyle trailing silently behind him.
He paused at the door with his hand on the handle then turned to Kyle.
"Do you believe me?"
"Aaron, it's not that I don't believe you. But Logan has known this woman for years. Why would she betray him?"
He had known Howard for years.
Didn't he betray him?
"Don't you find it a bit suspicious?"
"No, I don't." Kyle put a hand on his shoulder. "I think you need to rest and..."
"Hmm..." Aaron gave him a strained smile. He turned away from Kyle and opened the door.
"Surprise!"
