"Have you seen Aaron?" He asked, his eyes sweeping the room.

Logan stood to his feet. "What do you mean? Isn't he in the bedroom?"

"No, he's not."

"I was in the kitchen with the others."

Kyle's stomach dipped at the thought of Aaron leaving the apartment. He pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Aaron's number. It rang four times before going to voicemail.

"He's not answering his phone."

"What's going on with you two?"

Kyle stared at Logan, "Barbara is alive. She showed up a couple of hours ago at the department."

"Why didn't you tell me earlier?"

"I didn't know you would be having a surprise dinner for Aaron."

"What does this have to do with Aaron?"

"Nothing...we just had a little disagreement." Kyle told him. He wasn't going to tell him that Aaron had wanted to keep it a secret.

"Let me try calling him." Logan touched his arm before going into the bedroom.

Kyle tried calling Aaron again but it went straight to voicemail. He should have considered his words before venting his frustrations on Aaron.

"He's not answering."

"What's going on?" Pamela asked, walking out the kitchen.

"Aaron left."

"What do you mean he left?"

Pamela spun on her heels over to the couch to get her phone. Her fingers tapped fast on the screen before putting the phone to her ear.

She was on the phone for a few seconds before hanging up.

"I'm going to head out for a bit."

"Did you get him?"

"She shook her head, "No...It's going to voicemail."

Pamela grabbed her jacket and left the apartment.

Kyle went into the bedroom and grabbed his keys and gun. He checked the chamber to make sure he had enough ammunition.

He was pulling on his jacket as he exited the bedroom. "I'm going out to look for him."

"Kaia, if you think of anywhere he could be, call me."

"I will."

Kyle turned to Logan. "Try calling him again.

There was enough light in the apartment that he was able to see the intruder exiting the bedroom.

He pressed himself closer to the wall as the intruder neared his hiding spot.

"I couldn't find the box."

What box?

"The apartment doesn't look like he's been here for a while."

He was looking for the black metal box?

"I'll be there in a few minutes."

Aaron waited until he was right in front of him and snaked his arm around his neck. The intruder froze as he pressed the blade of the knife to his throat.

"What the hell are you doing here?"

Aaron kept his guard up, preparing for an attack. A second later, the intruder brought his elbow up but he managed to block it from striking him in the stomach. Aaron pushed the intruder away and duck just as his arm swung in his direction.

He brought the knife up and slashed the intruder across the back.

A pained grunt escaped the intruder's mouth before he turned towards him. Aaron stared at the unfamiliar face looking at him.

"I guess it's my lucky night."

Aaron held the knife up, blade outwards with his eyes fixed on the intruder. The guy charged at him but Aaron was able to bent backwards, the blade of a knife missing his neck. He brought his hand up and both blades hit.

He swung his other hand and clipped the guy against the face.

The intruder's head snapped to the side but it didn't slow him down. He managed to block a punch to the stomach but the knife slashed his bare arm. He kicked out with his right leg, hitting the guy across the back of his knee. As the intruder dropped to one knee, Aaron kicked the knife out of his hand.

He picked up the knife and threw it across the room.

"Who the hell are you?" Aaron asked.

The intruder slowly got to his feet with a chuckle. "None of your fucking business."

Aaron could feel the blood dripping down his arm but he didn't look to see how bad it was. His eyes drifted down when the intruder tapped his foot on the floor. A knife protruded from the tip of his left shoe.

"Whatever you're looking for here...you won't get it."

"Don't be so sure about that."

Aaron backtracked a few inches from the intruder when he heard footsteps outside the door.

He needed to incapacitate whoever was out there because he had nowhere to escape. His moment of distraction allowed the intruder to push him up against the wall.

His injured back hit the surface but he didn't have time to worry about tearing his stitches. He kneed the intruder in the stomach then brought his fist up, connection it with his jaw.

The intruder kept his balance this time and swung his left foot at him.

He dodged the blade and grabbed the intruder's leg. He brought the  knife he was holding down, stabbing the guy in the leg.

The guy barely made any noise. He bent forward, gripped the hand holding the knife and pulled it from his leg. Aaron stumbled a bit and the intruder swiped the shoe knife across his thigh.

Knowing this guy wouldn't give up, Aaron plunged the knife in his
femoral artery. This time the intruder screamed out and fell to the floor, holding his bleeding leg.

The door burst open and three men entered the apartment, brandishing guns. Aaron ran around the counter to shield himself. He crept to the last cupboard and opened it.

He searched through the cupboard until he found the gun he had hidden.

"Don't shoot him."

Aaron gripped the gun in his hand and took a deep breath. He listened to their footsteps getting closer.
