Aaron scooched down as the footsteps drew closer to his hiding spot. He peered through the leaves, watching as three armed men searched for them. Theo was on the opposite side, waiting for his signal.
He kept his eyes fixed on their movements. He wanted to take them out without making any noise.
With stealth move, Aaron pulled the knife from his pocket, and crept slowly from behind the tree.
The darkness helped to cover him, as he stood up and sidled behind the last gunman. Aaron wrapped a hand over his mouth and brought the knife down, piercing his chest. He pulled the body from sight, then followed the other two men, quickly taking them out without any noise.
Theo walked up to him. "It looks like you're well capable by yourself.
Aaron bent forward to drag the last body out of sight. "More will be coming."
"We only have 45 minutes to make it to the plane."
"Can we make it?"
"Yeah, but we gotta leave right now."
Shouts came from the trees, followed by running footsteps. They turned and ran down the trail away from Justin's men. Pain radiated down his side from the knife wound but Aaron kept running, breathing steadily. He had to endure that pain for now.
No way was he going to miss that plane.
Aaron breathed a huge sigh of relief mixed with exhaustion when he saw the clearing up ahead.
"Look, there's the plane!" Theo shouted.
The plane was a few feet ahead of them. Aaron gripped the strap of the bag as they picked up the pace.
As the space between each step towards the plane got smaller.
He could literally feel a weight lift off his shoulders when both feet hit the paved runway.
His head twisted to look over his shoulder when he heard tires crunching on the gravel. Four vehicles crashed through the fence, speeding towards them.
This guy wasn't going to give up easily.
Aaron ran at the highest speed possible. His heart pounded in his ears, drowning out any other sound.
The door of the plane opened and he saw the pilot waving his arms at them. Aaron reached the boarding stairs and climbed up into the plane.
Theo entered, breathing heavily.
"We... need to leave now. Start the plane."
"Yes, sir." The pilot dashed to the front of the plane and disappeared into the cockpit.
Aaron threw the bag onto one of the seats, then strapped himself with the seat belt. He glanced out the window and saw the vehicles driving onto the tarmac. He glanced over at Theo for a second, before looking back out the window.
As he watched the vehicles drew closer, there was a whoosh of air, followed by the roar of engines.
Aaron kept staring out the window as the plane taxied down the runway.
He couldn't hear the voices of the men outside the plane but their actions spoke volume. One of the jeep keep to a halt and he saw Justin stepped out the vehicle.
Aaron watched the figure got smaller and smaller, as the plane lifted into the air.
With a deep sigh, Aaron leaned his back against the seat and closed his eyes.
Weariness settled over him but he was brimming with elation at the thought of going home.
His joy was short-lived when he remembered what Justin had told him a couple of nights ago.
"There's no place that I can't find you."
"Aaron, you're safe now. Soon you'll be back home with your family."
"Justin isn't going to give up without a fight." He stated, peering over at Theo.
"I know. But we can get extra protection for you."
"I'm a cop. What kind of protecting do I need?" Aaron gave him a small tired smile before closing his eyes.
"I know a lot of people would bend backwards to protect you."
Aaron knew his family and friends would protect him without a thought to their own safety.
"Are you one of them?"
"We're friends."
"Is that a yes?"
"Yes, I would protect you."
"That's nice to know."
"Aaron, I need to tell you something."
Hearing the serious tone in his voice, Aaron's eyes blinked open.
"What is it?"
"I should have told you this a few days ago."
Aaron sat up, still staring at him warily. "Theo, what is it?"
Theo let out a sigh, "I'm not biological related to Justin."
A small relieved laugh left Aaron's mouth. "I thought you were going to deliver bad news. You should be happy that you're not related to him."
"Aaron, can I ask you a question?"
"Sure,"
"Do you remember your childhood?"
Aaron's body froze at the unexpected question. "What does my childhood has to do with our situation?"
"Do you remember anything from your childhood?"
"I vaguely remember anything from my childhood. Why did you ask me that question?
"Justin told me that he knew you years ago."
"What do you mean?"
"Justin has a twin brother name Stephen.
"Wait...Justin has a twin brother?"
Oh, God. They were two of them.
"They both knew you from childhood because of their father George Boyd."
Aaron's skin crawled at that name.
"George took them to visit your biological father once. Justin and Stephen both developed this unhealthy obsession with you."
"How do you know about that?"
"Justin told me everything."
The way Theo emphasized that word made him want to vomit, but he kept a neutral expression on his face.
"You know what happened to me?"
"Yes, I do."
