Kyle stayed awake afterwards, staring at Aaron's sleeping face. He traced a finger across Aaron's brow down to his lips.
"Why did you lie to me?" He asked softly in Aaron's ears. He brushed a kiss on Aaron's forehead, then did the same to Logan before getting out of bed. Kyle grabbed his phone on his way out the door. Out on the veranda, he dialed Harold's number.
"I'm going to change my number."
Laughter fell from Kyle's lips at the old greeting. "Yet, it still remains the same."
"Go on, tell me why you're disturbing my sleep?"
"I think Aaron remembers everything about that night." Kyle informed him in a somber voice.
"What makes you think so?"
"He called out Brett's name."
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds. "If he really remembers everything, he's not going to stop until he finds out the truth."
"Don't worry. I'll protect him."
"His parents are coming back tomorrow."
"I guess his mom gave you an earful?"
"My ears are still burning." A heavy sigh drifted from the phone. "His parents don't know about the rape at the academy. You know how powerful his parents are. If they find out, all hell will break loose."
"Then we should handle this as quietly as possible."
"Whatever helps he needs, give it to him."
"I will." He turned to the door only to find Aaron standing there, staring at him. "I'll call you later." Kyle said before hanging up the phone before entering the house.
"Who were you talking to?"
"I didn't hear you come down. I thought you were asleep?"
Aaron's gaze flickered from his to the phone. "That doesn't answer my question. Who were you talking with on the phone?"
One thing that Kyle always avoided was getting on Aaron's bad side. He had never lied to Aaron but only omitted one or two things from him.
"I was talking to Harold about our situation."
"Oh...what did he say?"
Kyle watched him trying to judge his mood. "Aaron, what are you..."
"How long have you known?"
Kyle froze at the question. He was going to pretend he didn't know what Aaron was asking him about.
"What are you talking about?"
"I've been having this dream after I left the academy. I thought it was a suppressed memory from my childhood. But as it progressed, more details kept adding on. It was still a little hazy. I couldn't see any of the faces or hear their voices."
Aaron's gaze zoned out.
"Tonight was different. It was like the wool was removed from my eyes and ears. This time everything was so vivid and horrifying. I was hoping it was a dream." Aaron took a breath and stared at him. "I was raped by Brett and his friends."
Kyle gritted his teeth in anger at the look on Aaron's face. "I'm sorry that I wasn't there for you."
"How could you have known? I had a lapse in judgment because he made me believe they were planning a birthday surprise for you. I knew you guys were friends, so I thought nothing of it. He drugged a bottle of water and gave it to me. After that, it was all a blur. I forgot everything because my brain couldn't handle it."
Given the things Aaron went through during his childhood, Kyle could understand the effect it had on him.
"How long have you known?"
"Not long...I swear."
"Does Harold know about this?"
"Yeah, he does. Someone sent a package to his home."
Aaron glanced at the stairs then at him. "Do you think Logan is going to still want me when he finds out I was raped?"
Kyle hastened to reassure him. "We both love you Aaron. That's never going to change." He pulled him into his arms. "We're here to stay."
Aaron's arms secured around Kyle's waist. "That's good to know."
They stayed there silently for a few minutes hugging each other until Aaron drawed back to lean on the back of the sofa. "What have you guys found out?"
Right to business. Kyle kept the space between them. "Harold is going to talk to the owner of the academy. And I will try to find Brett's last known address."
"Logan is our number priority right now. But I'm still going to find out the truth."
"I know. That's why I'm not going to try and stop you. We will find out the truth and make them pay."
"Logan hates secrets." Aaron told him.
"Are you going to tell him?"
"I will tell him but after we deal with Dirk."
Kyle heard something in Aaron's voice that had warning bells going off in his head. But he ignored it because he knew Aaron would never do anything without telling him.
"Okay. Let's go back to bed. It'll be morning soon."
"It's already four in the morning."
"Then we should get some rest. I have to go to the office later."
Kyle stared up at the dark ceiling, his mind still on what Aaron had told him. Brett had known that Aaron would say yes and he took advantage of it. How long had he been planning to carry out his plan?
Brett Saxe had no qualms when it came to drugging Aaron and he even invited his friends. Kyle had noticed the glances at Aaron a few days before but had chalked it up to the usual stares Aaron always received from his admirers. He had been foolish to think nothing was wrong with the extra attention aimed at Aaron.
