"The police are staking out his Aunt's house."
"What about his friends house?"
"It will be difficult trying to take them without alerting the police."
"And the owner of the diner?"
"Nothing as yet. Whoever took her isn't working for our side."
Dirk skimmed through the pages of Orton High School yearbook. He had circled those he had killed with red ink. "I have another job for you. I'm sending you a picture right now. Take care of it for me."
"Sure."
"Text me when it's done."
Dirk ended the call before dialing another number.
"What can I do for you?"
"I need you to find Logan's whereabouts. They're hiding him and I need to find out where."
"I'll get back to you in twenty-four hours."
"No longer." Dirk hung up the phone as he walked down to the basement where he had set up Logan's room.
He had prepared this room specially for him. It's been a week since his men lost Logan and no one can find him.
That damn guy had to be more than a student. Dirk could not suppress the anger he felt, his hands fisted at his sides. He was going to make him pay for losing face. The sound of his phone ringing shook him out of his thoughts.
He hit the dial button. "What do you want?"
"I have some information that you might want to hear."
"What kind of information?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"I don't like this." Kyle glanced at his boss.
Harold had called him in his office to discuss the situation involving whoever the mole was in the department. So far, it wasn't a cop from their building. But it had to be someone that often visited their building.
"Aaron needs to be extra careful. We don't know who else is out to get him."
Too many.
"Listen boss, I know it's something that you want to avoid but we need to look at those photos again. Maybe we missed a vital clue."
Harold ran a hand over his face with a sigh. "I thought about it two days ago." He pulled out a photo. "If you look closer, you can see an image in the mirror." He handed the photo to Kyle.
Kyle peered at the photo, eyes squinted at where Harold had pointed. There was a face in the mirror but it was too blurred for him to make out who it was.
"What do you want to do with it?"
"Take it down to tech. Have Pete deblur the photo."
The photo didn't show Aaron's face since it was hidden but Kyle still had his reservations about involving someone else in this.
"Do you trust Pete?" Kyle asked.
"Yes, I trust him. Don't you?"
The way Harold was staring at him made Kyle think that he knew the real reason he asked that question.
He did trust Pete just not around Aaron. "I'll get this photo down to him." Kyle stood up and walked to the door.
"Aaron is my godson and I would do anything to protect him. If anyone hurts him I'll deal with them in my own way."
Kyle paused with his hand on the door handle as he slowly turned to look at him. It was the first time finding out Harold was Aaron's godfather.
"Who else knows that Aaron is your godson?"
"No one else on the team knows but you."
"Why tell me about your relationship?"
"I told you because I know you love Aaron. I've seen the way you act around him."
"How long have you known?"
"Since the academy. When you thought no one was looking I would see the way you would stare at him."
"I guess I was lousy at hiding my feelings."
Harold stood up from his desk to stand in front of him. "Look, I'm not going to tell you to keep it on a professional level. You're both grown men."
Kyle knew that was his way of giving his blessings. And also a warning not to hurt Aaron. "Thanks, boss."
"Don't thank me yet. You still have to tell his parents and they are more protective than I am."
It had taken months before Aaron's parents had allowed Kyle to stay at their house. Then when Aaron had asked his parents permission to join the academy, his father had practically appointed him Aaron's bodyguard. But Aaron had proved to be more capable than half those guys there. But although Aaron could take down any of the guys, he had kept his temper under wraps.
So, Kyle had to step in and deal with them himself.
"I'm going down to tech."
"Aaron still hasn't remembered everything that happened to him at the academy."
He's starting to remember. How long will it be before his memories comes flooding back?
"We'll cross that bridge when it comes." Kyle closed the door when he left Harold's office.
He took the elevator down to tech to meet Pete. Pete was sitting at his desk, staring intently at the computer. He looked up when Kyle entered the room.
"I'm surprised to see you down here."
"Harold sent me down here. He wants you to deblur a photo for him."
"What kind of photo?"
Kyle handed over the photo to Pete without a word. He walked over to the stool and took a seat. "How long will it take?"
"Not long."
Kyle leaned back against the wall with his arms folded while he waited for Pete. His right foot would tap periodically as he listened to the hum of the machines.
Pete paused to look down at Kyle's feet then up at him.
"Keep it quiet. Or you can leave until it's done."
"Sorry," Kyle instantly stopped tapping his foot but he was getting impatient. He eyed Pete silently for a minute. It was the first time he was noticing that Pete wasn't as annoying when he was doing his job. Probably because he wasn't asking or looking for Aaron.
"I met up with that captain from the fire department."
"Did he find out anything else?"
"It was definitely arson. It wasn't done by a serial arsonist. The point of origin started in the kitchen. He thinks someone that knows the diner might have set the fire."
