Kyle stepped out the shower just as his phone started ringing. He quickly wrapped a towel around his waist then snatched the phone from the bathroom countertop. He frowned when he saw his sister's name on the screen.
He pressed the talk button. "Rita, why are you calling so late?"
"We had to move Frieda to another safe house."
"Did you get hurt?"
"No, I'm fine. No one got hurt."
Relief filled him
"Do you need my help with anything?"
"Contact your boss. Tell him we need to meet."
"When?"
"In the morning, around seven."
"Okay, I'll let him know." Kyle leaned against the counter. "I'll have to tell Aaron about what happened tonight."
"I know. I'll call you later."
Kyle ended the call and walked in the bedroom. After getting dressed he sat on the edge of the bed and sent a message to Aaron. His phone chimed as he received a reply.
He read the message then decided to call Aaron. Aaron answered on the second ring.
"Someone wants to silence Frieda."
"Her two friends were already killed."
"I guess we're running out of time."
"All we know right is that one of her friends was a plastic surgeon."
"A plastic surgeon? Did Stephen changed his face?"
"Highly probable."
"Or maybe he wants us to believe that he did."
"You don't think he had the surgery?"
"I don't know. Changing your face isn't an easy thing to do. It takes time."
"Rita wants to see us tomorrow."
"Did she tell you why she wants to meet?"
"No, she didn't."
"Kyle, I need to tell you something."
"What is it?"
There was a pause for a few seconds before he heard a muffled yawn.
"Kyle, I'm sorry but can we talk in the morning. I can barely keep my eyes open."
"Sure, I'll pass by tomorrow after the meeting."
"I'll see you tomorrow."
Kyle pulled the phone away from his ear then glanced over at Logan to make sure he was still asleep. He shifted the blankets and crawled into bed, a sigh leaving his mouth.
Kyle shifted and flung an arm over Logan, bringing him closer to his body. He pressed a soft kiss to his forehead as he stared up at the dark ceiling.
"Can't sleep?" Logan's breath tickled the skin beneath his ear.
"I have some things on my mind."
"Does it have anything to do with Aaron leaving the party?"
"It has partly to do with it." Kyle sighed.
"Do you want to tell me?"
"It was just me being a bit possessive."
Logan rolled on his side and rest his chin on Kyle's stomach, his fingers tapping on Kyle's chest.
"Are you sure? Did you say anything to upset him?"
"I was frustrated and took it out on him."
"I'm sure Aaron's not angry with you. Talk to him and apologize."
"I will." Kyle said, stroking Logan's hair. "What time does your classes start?"
"The Dean is sending me the link at nine tomorrow."
"You should probably get some sleep."
Logan leaned up to kiss him. "Don't worry about Aaron." He settled back down and closed his eyes.
Even after Logan fell asleep, Kyle was still awake. His mind deep in thought about what plans they should put in place to finally bring this case to an end.
When sleep finally came, it was already ten. At first his dream was peaceful but it suddenly changed to him standing outside a window looking in at Aaron bleeding on the floor. He shouted his name loudly but Aaron wouldn't move. Kyle looked to his right and saw the door leading to the room.
He rushed over and tried the knob but it wouldn't open. Kyle pounded his fists on the hard surface, shouting Aaron's name. He ran to the window but Aaron had disappeared.
Kyle twirled around in confusion, wondering where his body could have vanished. He shouted Aaron's name but to no avail.
"Kyle...wake up. You're having a bad dream." Someone shook his shoulders.
Kyle jerked awake, chest heaving as he took deep breaths trying to calm himself down.
He ran a hand over his face. "I'm sorry if I woke you up."
"It's fine." Logan ran a hand up and down his back soothingly. "What were you dreaming about?"
"I was dreaming about the case."
"I've never seen you like this before."
"It's not a big deal. I'm just a little stressed." Kyle laid back on the bed and pulled Logan into his arms.
"Try to close your eyes." Logan whispered. "I'm right here with you."
A calm settled over Kyle but his eyes refuse to close. The image of Aaron's body lying on the floor was still vivid in his mind.
In the dream he hadn't been able to tell if Aaron was alive or dead. Was his dream foreshadowing that something bad would happen to Aaron?
