The crisp evening air brushes against my skin, a welcome contrast to the sun's earlier blaze. It's like the beach itself is sighing in relief, the breeze carrying away the intensity of the day.

I can hear the laughter of my friends, a sound that's normally infectious, but tonight it's tinged with my own undercurrent of anxiety.

They're oblivious to the tumultuous thoughts swirling in my head, all centered on Eli's impending arrival.

I try to focus on the frisbee game, the arc of it cutting through the air, the shouts as someone makes an impressive leap to catch it. But my gaze keeps drifting to the empty stretch of sand where Eli and Moon will eventually appear.

The last time Eli and I spoke, words were weapons that left nothing but wreckage. I'm not sure if I'm ready to face him, even though Tory has sworn that peace will be kept.

The sun is setting now, the sky a canvas of soft pastels. Tory's words are a lifeline I'm desperately clinging to. Eli will be civil. I will be civil. We can coexist amidst this tranquil seascape.

As the breeze picks up, it seems to carry a promise, a chance for a fresh start. I take a deep breath, letting the ocean's rhythm calm my racing heart.

Tonight, it's just the beach, my friends, and the hope that maybe Eli and I can find a way to smooth over the jagged edges of our past.

"Sam." Tory called my name, walking towards me. "Come join us and play frisbee."

I chuckled while taking a swig of my beer. "Are you sure? I don't want to intrude."

"Come on, let's have some fun." She grabbed my hand and she dragged us to the rest of our group of friends.

The friends consist of Miguel, Demetri, Yasmine, Stingray, Bert, Chris, Nate. We're waiting for Eli and Moon to arrive.

"Sam wants to join?" Miguel asked.

"If that's okay." I said.

"Totally." Miguel smiled. "The more, the better."

"Perfect." Tory smiled as well.

So we all enjoyed a game of frisbee even though we're just throwing it around and having a laugh. When the plastic disc would be thrown to me, I would catch it and then throw it to someone.

I was honestly having a lot of fun. And so was everyone else. We couldn't stop smiling and laughing.

And then a voice appears. A voice that I know all too well.

"What's up?" Eli said to everyone.

Moonlight glints off the ocean, casting a silvery glow on the beach where my friends are gathered. I watch from a distance, my heart a pendulum between anticipation and dread.

Eli moves among them, his laughter a familiar sound that once felt like home. Moon is by his side, a silent sentinel, and together they navigate the group with an ease that makes my chest tighten.

I try to look away, to find interest in the patterns the waves etch in the sand, but my gaze is inevitably drawn back to him.

His eyes meet mine in a fleeting glance, and for a moment, time seems to stutter. It's as if the entire beach falls silent, the waves pausing mid-crash, and the laughter fading into a hush.

A rush of emotions floods through me, so potent and varied I can't begin to name them all. Confusion wars with hope, anger with longing.

I'm a statue, frozen in the sand, unable to decipher the message in his eyes.
