"Devika!"

Nishita's voice reverberated along the shore as she finally caught sight of her friend standing near the exit of one of the resort's storerooms.

Throughout the entirety of the day, they had tirelessly combed every nook and cranny, their calls for Devika's name growing increasingly desperate with each passing moment. Nishita's heart pounded in her chest, her mind plagued by a thousand dreadful scenarios, each one more terrifying than the last, as she feared the worst for her closest friend.

As the day wore on without a trace of Devika, Nishita's heart had grown heavy with uneasiness. Despite Jagdish's attempts to offer reassurance, Nishita's anxiety had hit the roof. Jagdish had tried to offer some comfort, but it hadn't quite cut it for Nishita. "Please, find her," she had practically begged, her voice shaking with fear, "or I don't know how I'll handle it."

Guilt had gnawed at Nishita as she had been the one to persuade their group of friends to go to Goa. Though they had all been mature adults capable of making their own decisions, Nishita couldn't shake the feeling that she had inadvertently placed Devika in harm's way.

The bond between Nishita and Devika was akin to a well-worn pair of shoes—comfortable, reliable, and enduring. From their earliest days, they had been inseparable companions, sharing adventures and secrets with the ease of lifelong friends. Devika wasn't merely a friend to Nishita; she was her confidante, her partner in mischief, and a steadfast presence in times of need.

Devika held a unique and cherished position in Nishita's heart. Over the years, Nishita had borne witness to Devika's battles with relationships, scars from past traumas inflicted by her parents leaving lasting marks. Through it all, Nishita had stood as a steadfast pillar of support in Devika's life, being her best friend and loving her unconditionally.

Indira and Neelesh, her parents, had treated Devika like their own daughter, showering her with love and praise alongside Nishita. Despite the warmth she received from them, Devika carried a deep-seated emptiness within her. She had built walls around her heart, fearing attachment and the inevitable pain it brought, except when it came to Nishita.

Nishita's attachment to Devika was equally strong. Her day revolved around Devika, from morning calls to evening hugs. Even on solo trips, she missed Devika's sarcastic remarks and their adventures together. Though distance sometimes separated them, technology bridged the gap, yet nothing could replace their deep connection.

Devika may not have been academically inclined, but she possessed a sharp mind. She dismissed the pursuit of fame or accolades, finding contentment in her own identity. While Nishita often chided her for underestimating her potential, Devika remained steadfast in her belief that she was enough just as she was.

Such was her lovely Viki's attitude toward life.

"Oh, Kanha!" Nishita cried.

"Ah, don't..." Devika flinched as Nishita rushed towards her, arms outstretched for a hug.

Pulling back slightly, Nishita's worry was evident. "Where have you been? And what is this?" She gently touched Devika's bruised lips and cheeks.

She watched as Devika scanned the group of people behind Nishita; Jagdish, and their friends, eagerly awaiting Devika's response.

"I... I... I fell... And... I don't remember but someone carried me to the resort and tucked me in," Devika explained, her voice hoarse, her gaze avoiding the group of people.

Jagdish, stepping closer, interjected, "Who?"

"I said someone... If I had known who wouldn't I have mentioned the person's name!" Devika snapped, her frustration palpable.

Noticing Devika's unease, Nishita gently urged Jagdish to step back, signaling him not to interfere. With concern etched in her expression, she locked eyes with Devika, her gaze intent on unraveling the truths hidden behind her lies.

"It's just... I was so scared, Devika... We've been searching for you all day," Nishita's voice trembled with emotion.

"What's the time?" Devika's voice cut through Nishita's rambling.

Jagdish replied, "It's five in the evening."

Devika's eyes shifted between the crowd and Nishita, her lips quivering. "I... I had passed out for one whole day?"

Nishita pulled her friend into a warm embrace, comforting her. "Shh... It's okay, we can talk about this later." She glanced at Jagdish over her shoulder. "I think we should leave, it's already late now."

Returning her focus to Devika, Nishita spoke with gentle reassurance. "Why don't you freshen up? We'll all depart together, alright?"

Devika nodded meekly, her face turning as blank as ice.
