"You know, you could have rather shifted to our apartment," Devika grumbled as she walked into the garden. "Jagdish shouldn't have bothered convincing Kant for us to fucking shift here."

Nishita smiled. "Our apartment?" she questioned, clicking her tongue. "Interesting. I was under the impression it was Kant's property. Did something change? Did he already jump the gun and make it a joint ownership?"

Devika gave her a dirty look. "Since my rent goes straight into his pocket, I'd say I have some claim to his apartment." A barely-there twitch crossed her lips. "That asshole just happens to be the owner... and a generous benefactor, that's all."

"Ah, of course," Nishita chuckled as she watered the plants, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Rent, right? How quaint. Silly me, how could I forget you're just a renter... Absolutely nothing more to see or understand, right?"

Devika's face flushed with a mixture of anger and something else, a flicker of emotion Nishita couldn't quite place. "Cut it out... Whatever fucking nonsense you are trying!" she snapped, her voice tight. Yanking the watering can from Nishita's grasp with surprising force, water sloshed over the rim, spraying the leaves of the nearby plants.

With a theatrical gasp, Nishita feigned innocence. "Kanha! Viki, what's gotten into you? Can't a girl water the plants her dear husband nurtured for so long?"

"Spare me the Yash Chopra act, Nishita," Devika said dryly. "Just because you found your happily ever after doesn't mean you need to play Cupid for everyone else and start matchmaking."

Nishita's laughter exploded, echoing in the garden. "Matchmaking? Seriously?" she wheezed, wiping tears from her eyes. "Viki, matchmaking!?"

For the next few minutes, Devika just glared daggers at her incredibly annoying friend, who gasped like a dying hyena caught in a fit of laughter, clutching her stomach and making noises. It felt as if Devika was auditioning for a role in a clown show with her lunatic frolic stunts. She couldn't take it anymore. "Fucking shut up!" she finally exploded.

Nishita composed herself, taking a deep breath. "Gosh, you do have a funny bone, Viki," she said, plopping down onto the ground with a soft sigh. "And for your information, I am not setting you guys up together."

"Is it?" Devika challenged.

"Yes." Nishita shrugged.

Devika's voice crescendoed with each word. "Why, Nishu? Why drag me into this mess? Telling Kant I was thrilled to stay with him? And concocting some other absurd tale for me! You lied to him, and then you lied to me!" She flung the watering can away in frustration. "Do you have any idea how mortified I felt when he made that crack about me being the one trying to nab him because 'Nishita told me you had no problem, that you were delighted to stay in my apartment and ruin my life.'?" She mimicked Chandrakant's grumpy voice, sounding more like a constipated goat than a woman with a point.

"Because both of you are too stubborn to see it yourselves, and by god, I'm itching to slap some sense into you, Devika... I told you to sort things out with him before he ends up marrying someone else because... Because when you two are together, the world melts away, and all you see is each other like nothing else matters but being together."

"Rubbish." Devika kicked her feet out, the movement jerky and uncontrolled. "We just fight and..." she mumbled, pausing to prevent herself from saying more than necessary. She gulped, blinking her eyes rapidly. "...and shout at each other."

Nishita's eyebrows climbed higher, a knowing glint in her eyes. "Is that all? Viki," she said, her voice dropping to a low murmur, "be honest with yourself. Has there been nothing... at all... between you two?" her gaze flickered to Devika's hand nervously picking at her shirt. "Come on, don't play coy with me. I'm not blind. Every time you look at him, it's like you want to..." she trailed off, letting the implication hang heavy in the air. "And let's not forget," she continued, a pointed edge to her voice, "all that 'fighting' can be a pretty good cover for other things, wouldn't you say?"

Devika squeezed her eyes shut, a strangled sound escaping her lips. "It's not that simple, Nishita. Lust and love are two different things..." Her voice trailed off, heavy with unspoken regret. "He has every reason to hate me. I did something terrible."

"Then ask for forgiveness," Nishita urged. "Is it so bad to apologize for the sake of your own happiness?"

"What about him, huh? He wasn't exactly an angel either!" Devika opened her eyes, tears welling up. "Can't he just swallow his pride and try to see things from my perspective for once?"

"Did you give him a chance to understand you?" Nishita asked, shaking her head in exasperation. "This is what you've done since childhood, Viki—always running away from your problems... and happiness, not giving a chance to yourself. It's still a mystery how you haven't run away from me, considering all the tough times we've been through together."

"Nishu..."

"Go," Nishita said firmly. "I don't want to talk to you right now, I don't have time for you or your self-destructive ways. Go and ruin your life if that's what you want."

A/N

Something Nishita should have done ages ago. My girl Devika needs a wake-up slap and a season pass to a good therapist.

"Kabira" for Devika to finally stop running away and start accepting the good things in her life.
