"Who are they?" Nishita tugged at Jagdish's sherwani, her eyes wide as she watched the scene unfold before her, a melodrama that could rival a Star Plus serial. Mrs. Singh was wailing silently as a group of uncles surrounded her, hugging her tightly.
Hmm... I didn't even shed this many tears at my own bidaai... Why are they crying so much?
Jagdish smiled at her, his eyes twinkling with affection. "They are her brothers. The bond they share runs deep, and they've missed each other profoundly."
Brother-s. Plural! BROTHERS!? The Trivedis!!!
Nishita felt a surge of chaotic emotions welling up inside her. These were the men who had once wanted to abandon an unborn child—her husband—to some faraway adoption center! These were the ones who had pressured Mrs. Singh to forsake her love and marry someone else! And here was Jagdish, smiling at them as if they were long-lost friends. Her blood boiled with anger as she glared at the men who had wished harm upon Jagdish before he was even born. She wanted to scream at them, to throw them out of the house—well, they were already outside, but still! The sheer audacity of their presence made her want to do something drastic.
"How dare they come here!" Nishita muttered furiously.
Jagdish, startled, looked at her in confusion. "Dare? I invited them to our wedding and to meet their sister."
"What!?"
"Yes, wifey." He pulled her along as he approached the group of men Nishita wanted to incinerate with her glare.
She couldn't fathom how Jagdish had risked his life to meet those barbarians in Mathura. What if they had tried to harm him? They looked like hooligans—rich, old brats with a dangerous sense of entitlement. They could have seriously hurt him or worse. The mere thought of losing him sent a shiver down her spine. What would she have done without him? Her heart ached with the thought. How could he be so reckless, so willing to put himself in danger for the sake of people who had once shown such cruelty to their pregnant sister? If anything had happened to him then—
Then, what...? What, Nishita!?
"Mamaji, Namaste," she heard Jagdish greet one particularly fit older man, muscular for his age. "Meet my wife, Nishita."
An older woman rushed forward, her face lit with excitement. "Our bahu is so beautiful," she said, turning to Jagdish. "We're sorry we couldn't make it to your wedding. We tried, but..."
"Bhabhiji, what are you even sorry for? Do you know how blessed Jagdish and Nishita are to have your blessings?" Mrs. Singh interjected, and that was the last straw for Nishita's already thin patience.
She pursed her lips, her eyes blazing with barely contained anger. "Weren't these the very people who threw a pregnant woman out of their home?" she seethed. "Didn't they want to harm my husband before he was even born?"
Jagdish inhaled sharply, grabbing her arm and pulling her back slightly. "Nishita!"
"What!? Did I say anything wrong?"
The group fell silent, tension crackling in the air. Yashoda looked at Nishita in horror, as if her daughter-in-law had just unleashed a tsunami. "Nishi Beta, they..." she began, her voice faltering, unable to find the words to cut through the painful silence. Nishita's frustration and protective instincts had reached their boiling point, and the sting of her words left everyone in stunned silence.
The older woman who had praised Nishita's beauty cleared her throat as she adjusted the pallu in her head. "Yasho, you've found a girl just like you to be your bahu, haven't you?" she chuckled. "What do you young people call it? Ah, yes, déjà vu. It feels like I'm back in the Trivedi house, listening to my lovely Nanad cry and scream about her love."
Yashoda blushed a deep crimson as the older men laughed. One of them, probably the eldest, stepped closer to Mr. Singh and patted his back. "Seems like there are not one, but two women who care deeply for Singh men, huh?"
For the first time, Nishita saw Mr. Singh blush and bow his head slightly. It would have been amusing to her if she wasn't so irritated by the Trivedis' presence and Jagdish's apparent obliviousness to the danger they posed.
The older man turned to Nishita with a kind, gentle expression. "Bahu, I promise you, I never thought of harming your husband or my sister. More than my sister, I have raised her as my daughter, and a father can never think such horrible things."
Nishita saw the genuine affection in the old man's eyes and felt her anger waver. She nodded slightly, her voice softening. "Okay, I'm sorry for being abrupt," she muttered. "I was worried for Jagdish."
"Bahu, in that case, you are worried for Bhaiyya as well, as his name is Jagdish too," a man probably as old as Mrs. Singh, chirped in. Everyone around them laughed.
Despite her irritation, Nishita couldn't help but smile back, albeit reluctantly. The warmth and sincerity in the old man's words and eyes were disarming. She still felt protective of Jagdish, but perhaps, just maybe, she could begin to see the family beyond the pain they had once caused.
Jagdish's grandmother shook her head in disbelief. "It took three generations of Singh men to bring the Trivedi men to our house, huh?"
The same uncle shrugged, "We are known to be 'Jiddi' for a reason." and the twins who followed him sang, "Trivedi hai hum!" to which their mother slapped their heads and asked them to shut up.
Devika leaned closer to Nishita and muttered in her ear, "Iss circus mein swagat hai aapka, badi bahu!"
