"Fucking hell!"

Nishita's frustration boiled over as she struggled to scrub off the ubtan from her calves, the dried mehendi painfully peeling away with the turmeric and sandalwood paste that had been liberally slathered all over her body by everyone. The memory of Shravan's hysterical laughter when Devika dumped a substantial amount of haldi on her head felt like salt in her wounds.

"Why apply this stupid thing to the places where it won't even matter!"

Right on cue, her phone blared loudly, pushing her annoyance to its zenith as she exclaimed, "Argh, damn this phone!"

The screen lit with her darling husband's name... Well, soon-to-be-husband, with just twenty-nine hours remaining until then.

"Jagdish," she asked, keeping her phone on speaker as her hands were busy cleaning herself. "What happened?"

"Nothing."

She stopped pouring water on her leg and raised her brows as if her action would be visible to him. "Nothing? Then why did you call?"

"I wanted to hear your voice, wifey," he replied, his voice sounding deeper than his casual tone and something in her stomach flipped. She could feel her body heating up as her mind envisioned how his eyes would turn darker, how he would blush to say those words in front of her.

Oh, he knows only to blush, he won't write long poems about your beauty or appreciate your efforts to adjust a bit for him. High and mighty, Mrs. Singh's Sher.

Why do you sound like a hopeless romantic?

Do I?

With a tight pout, she took a mug full of water and started rubbing her other leg. "You heard it, now what?"

He chuckled. "Why are you so pissed? Did your Mami scold you about anything?"

"I am washing off this stupid dried ubtan from my stupid leg as a part of some stupid riti riwaaz."

"Hmm... So, you are already tired of all the rituals?" Jagdish asked, his tone turning to a lighter mood, "You don't enjoy it?"

"No, absolutely not." She replied immediately, "Why would I enjoy it? It's like a punishment. Maybe Sangeet is something I would enjoy, but others are nothing but a headache." her frustration oozing out with each word, she said, "And on top of that I have to act shy and just keep my mouth shut."

She could hear Jagdish laugh and grunted, "Don't you dare to laugh!"

"Sweet Nishita, if you don't like it, why did you agree on it?" He continued, "We could have had a simple court marriage like Unni and Sana."

"Like my wishes matter." Nishita glanced at her bucket, discovering it was devoid of the warm water she had hoped for, prompting a facepalm. "Hold on a moment, I'll need to ring Viki to refill my bucket... Or how about I call you after half an hour?"

"Okay."

After finishing up bathing, she called Jagdish, "Hello."

"You were taking a bath when you picked up my call?" Jagdish sounded surprised and she shrugged nonchalantly noting Devika sleeping peacefully. She left her bedroom and stepped towards the terrace, smiling like a coy bride in front of everyone that she was supposed to pose as. "Nishita, you there?"

"Haan, Deva!" she replied hastily, "I'm just looking for a spot where I can have some peace and quiet to talk."

"I asked if you were taking a bath?"

"Yes."

"Hmm."

"Are you blushing?"

"N-No."

"I can hear it."

"Anyway, why did you say your wishes don't matter?" she heard him ask incredulously as if finding it unbelievable.

It had been meant as a joke, a playful remark. She wasn't one to easily bend to anyone else's desires and whims, though she didn't mind fulfilling her parents' wish for a wedding steeped in tradition. Yet, his concern over such a trivial remark caught her off guard.

"It's not like I'll just go along with whatever anyone says," she replied, "My parents wanted everything just so, and I'm sure you had your own dreams about our wedding."

"My dreams are whatever you wish for," he replied immediately without hesitation, "Wifey, if you want to put a stop to all of it, just say the word. I'll come over right now and talk to your parents about it."

She felt the ground shifting beneath her feet. Who was this man, so ready to stand up for her desires? He didn't fit the image of Mrs. Singh's "Sher," that much was certain. This Jagdish was someone different, and it was disorienting, it was fucking up her head that she closed her eyes.

What was she supposed to expect? What was she supposed to believe? Was this the real Jagdish, or merely the image Mrs. Singh, a mother, had painted of her son? Who was this person, truly?

"Nishita?"

"Why do you care?" she blurted out.

"Huh?" Jagdish sounded baffled, "Why wouldn't I care? I'm your husband, Nishita. What kind of a man would I be if you couldn't trust me with your life?"

"I don't know anything about you, neither do you, and still you act as if... as if..." she struggled to express her emotions, unable to finish her sentence.

Jagdish sighed. "I can't explain it, but one thing is certain... I'm committed to you in every way, and you shouldn't hesitate to share your desires with me." He paused before adding, "Remember, Nishita, I promise that even if the world stands against you, I'll stand only with you, because you mean everything to me."

It was the first time Jagdish had spoken to her at such length, and the weight of his words overwhelmed her. Her heart raced as she felt the depth of his promise, his breathing turned erratic as she tried to stop feeling so much so soon.

Tears welled in her eyes. "Oh, Jagdish... Please..."

"Nishita, my life is yours. I belong to you like you belong to me."

A/N

*coughs* *coughs* Sounds like a confession, doesn't it?

Regardless, poor Nishita is now utterly confused about what's real and what's not. I just feel sorry for her; she's been led to believe one thing, but her reality is something else entirely.

The next up in the Shadi Sangeet Special is "Rabb Kare Tujhko Bhi." This song suits the chapter as well. I love this song except for the random 'aah' 'ooh' and other weird orgasmic sounds they have peppered all over the song. I mean... Why did they spoil such a beautiful song with such nuisance, nonsense!?
