"Nishita?" Jagdish began, flipping on the mattress and gently pulling Nishita onto his chest. He tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "There's something I've been wanting to talk about."
Her eyelids fluttered open, a smile gracing her lips. "Uh-huh," she hummed, tracing a pattern on his chest. "What is it?"
Jagdish took a deep breath. This was it. "Are you..." He hesitated, then blurted out, "Are you truly happy about the baby?"
Nishita's playful fingers on his chest halted, her brow furrowing slightly. "What do you mean?"
He fidgeted, his unease bubbling to the surface. "I, uh," he stammered, searching for the right words. "It's just... you're so focused on your career right now, and you're still so young. I just wanted to mak—"
"Is there some unwritten rule that career-driven women with strong, independent values can't be mothers?" Nishita cut him off before he could finish, her voice hardening.
He licked his lips nervously, feeling a sudden dryness in his mouth.
"Jagdish," she began, her gaze turning icy. "Answer me," she demanded, her voice a sharp edge cutting through the air. She sat up, pulling the comforter tighter around her. "Is the idea of motherhood only for the damsel and distress type? Or just for the women who want to become the ideals of sacrifice? Or for those who have achieved everything and have nothing to do with their lives? Or those who have hustled enough and feel that family should be the only priority in life? Or probably for those who are forced to have kids?"
Jagdish's throat constricted as he swallowed hard. The anger in his lovely wife's eyes was unmistakable, a hurricane brewing in their stormy grey depths. He stammered out a defense, "No, that's not what I meant at all... I was just thinking, maybe I shouldn't have—"
"Did you think I was clueless?" her voice sliced through him like ice. An eyebrow arched high, a question hanging in the air. "Do you think I'm so naive to have no idea how women get pregnant?"
"Nish—"
She scoffed, a sharp, dismissive sound. "Jagdish, if you're feeling guilty about something, don't make it about me. Marrying you and having this child—these were always my choices. You didn't ruin anything."
Jagdish could only stare, speechless.
"Yes," she continued, her voice gaining momentum, "I want to become CA. I want my own firm. I want to travel the world. And do so many things..." She took a breath, her gaze hardening, "... But I want a family too."
"Nishita..."
"I haven't finished," she interrupted, raising a hand. "Do you know why I love your mother so much?"
Jagdish remained silent.
A wistful smile played on her lips. "Last year, when we met, she completely transformed my perspective on life. Marriage, family, kids—they used to be anathema to me, a trap that would steal my freedom and happiness. But your mother..." she shook her head, her smile widening, "...she was so different."
"She did have a way with her words and it was her who encouraged me to meet you, but that was just the beginning. But after talking to her I looked around and realized that I have been judging everyone based on the harsher things I saw during my travels, I was focusing on smaller things but never looked at the larger picture..." She looked around, blinking her eyes, "Blindly, I'd seen Maa sacrificing sleep for my late-night study sessions. But when the gold medal hung around my neck, I never noticed the unbridled joy in her eyes, a joy that eclipsed even my own. It wasn't just my mother. Women all around me, women I'd dismissed as resigned or trapped, were radiating a quiet contentment I'd never noticed before. The realization of how foolish I'd been to ignore the quiet happiness all around washed over me."
She stared at him, her eyes now brimming with the same love he had seen countless times before—the love she had always struggled to acknowledge. "Life can never be picture perfect, and I've come to embrace the imperfections. After meeting you, I felt an overwhelming sense of safety, just like I do when I'm at home with Maa and Papa. I realized that you are my home, the place I want to return to after a long, tiring day because I know you'll always ensure my peace. I want to be part of your family, Jagdish."
Leaning in, she cupped his face gently. "Yes, I'm young and fiercely focused on achieving my dreams, but I also want to be your wife and the mother of our children. It won't be easy, but I know you'll be by my side, tackling it the best way possible, won't you?"
Jagdish's vision blurred and he blinked. "I will."
