"So, how's the new apartment?" Nishita asked, her phone balanced on speaker mode as she carefully applied a fresh coat of black nail polish. She had been itching to try out a gothic look for quite some time, and now, with some extra free time on her hands, she thought it was the perfect opportunity to experiment. Yesterday, she had cut her mid-length hair to shoulder length, bought a new trekking backpack, taken Bittu to the vet for a general checkup, and even argued with her mother about calling Jagdish by his name instead of the more respectful "Jagdishji." After all, she wasn't going to refer to her husband as if he were some old uncle.
"It's garbage! Ugh, it's awful!" Devika's voice crackled through the speaker, laden with disgust. "How does this guy even live here?"
A faint rustling suggested Devika was already sorting through the clutter in Chandrakant's apartment. Nishita rolled her eyes, a small smile playing on her lips. "Come on, that's just your OCD talking, Viki. I'm sure it's not that bad. You're probably exaggerating," she said, applying a final coat of nail polish. "Jagdish probably thinks I live in a trash can after visiting my room. He definitely made a face when he walked in."
"He walked into your room?" Devika's voice perked up with interest. "Did he stay over?"
Nishita shrugged casually. "Yeah, it was late, and my parents weren't thrilled about him driving back. Plus, you know..." she trailed off, a blush creeping up her neck as the memory of their kiss the next morning surfaced.
Devika's amusement was clear. "Of course," she said, voice dripping with playful sarcasm. "He is your husband, after all." Nishita could practically picture Devika's teasing smile.
"Exactly," Nishita said, a touch breathless. "So, anyway, did you have a chance to settle in a bit yet?"
"Stop diverting! Tell me everything!" Devika pressed. "So, did you two have a nice time together?"
Nishita hesitated. "It was... different." She blushed, feeling a mix of excitement and embarrassment.
"Different?" Devika's curiosity was piqued. "Different how?"
"We kissed," Nishita blurted out, the words tumbling out before she could stop them. A wide grin spread across her face and her cheeks burned a deeper red as she relived the unexpected moment.
Devika sighed dramatically. "Just kissed?"
"Viki!" Nishita whined, feeling a wave of exasperation. "We barely know each other! Jagdish probably wouldn't be ready for anything more right now, anyway."
Devika scoffed. "Men," she said sarcastically, "They think only about one thing. Even a virgin can perform like a pro when it comes to that."
"VIKI!" Nishita shouted, exasperated.
Devika chuckled. "What? Just being honest. But seriously, taking it slow is good. I might have had my fair share of flings except for one where... I think real connection matters... and, well, Jagdish is right, and it's good."
"Hmm..." Nishita agreed softly, her thoughts drifting back to the stunning moment she shared with Jagdish. The memory of their kiss lingered in her mind, filling her with a warmth she hadn't expected. She had always been a pragmatic person, never one to get swept up in romantic notions. Yet, there was something about Jagdish that made her want to believe in the possibilities of their relationship.
Devika's voice cut through her reverie. "So, spill! How was it? The kiss, I mean. Was it everything you imagined?"
Nishita smiled, her blush deepening. "It was... amazing. Completely unexpected. It felt like we were both discovering something new, together."
"Aww," Devika cooed. "That's so romantic. See, taking it slow isn't so bad after all. You're building a foundation, and that's important."
Nishita nodded, even though Devika couldn't see her. "You're right. It's just... sometimes I wish things would move a little faster. I want to know him better, to be closer to him."
"You will," Devika reassured her. "Give it time. The best relationships are the ones that grow naturally. And who knows? You might be surprised at how quickly things can change once you start opening up more to each other."
Nishita hummed.
"So, are you guys calling each other regularly, or is Jagdishji still being elusive as fuck?" Devika chuckled.
Nishita sighed, "He doesn't like to call or chat much, so not really." She paused before adding, "Anyway, he's coming tomorrow to get me, and I have to head back to Mumbai. I'll visit your place after that."
"Sure," Devika said. "I hope by then I can clear out this shithole."
After saying their goodbyes, Nishita lay flat on her bed, staring at the ceiling. Her thoughts drifted back to Jagdish, and she couldn't help but smile as she remembered his beautiful brown eyes.
My darling husband, my Jagdish.
Hehn? Darling husband? Nishita, feels like you are falling for this man too soon.
Well...
What? He's your husband? That's the answer you have for defending him every time.
Well...
WHAT!?
Nothing...
She sighed and flipped over, trying to sleep and dream about him.
