Two weeks evaporated like mist in the morning air, leaving Nishita a hot mess of wedding jitters. With only five days left until the wedding, she was gnawing on her perfectly manicured nails like they were a bag of chips. Devika, ever the vigilant bridesmaid, spotted the anxious nibbling and smacked Nishita's hand away.
"Hey! You shelled out good money to make those nails cute," she chided, raising an eyebrow. "If you're that desperate to chew them off before earning the license to share a bed with Jagdish, you could have just asked him to help. He might have happily devoured you himself."
She leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a mischievous whisper. "Who knows? He might be looking forward to it as much as you are."
Nishita's cheeks turned a shade of crimson that could rival a ripe tomato as she shot Devika a withering look. "Cut it out with your innuendos," she snapped.
Devika, completely unfazed, let out a laugh that echoed like a mischievous bell. "Oh, I'll quit, but don't think for a second that Jagdish won't pick up right where I left off," she teased, her eyes twinkling with amusement at Nishita's irritation. "Trust me, he's got a whole repertoire of his own, and I bet he's been saving the best ones for later."
Repertoire, my foot! He can't even string together more than three sentences without taking a dramatic pause.
But he did that little show once.
Once... Laugh at yourself to remember that... Once!
She sighed.
The day of the Chunari Chadan ceremony had arrived, and Nishita was gearing up to face her future mother-in-law. Until now, commitment and relationships had been smooth sailing for her, but at that moment, she felt a pang of nervousness sharp enough to cut through steel. She adored Mrs. Singh— they'd had countless heart-to-heart chats over the phone and Skype, and Mrs. Singh had even popped by Pune to check on her preparation for CA-CPT and share some fun times. But now, things were getting real.
Mrs. Singh, the friendly figure who felt like a second mom, was about to morph into her Saasu-Maa. This was the feared mother-in-law stereotype that haunted many brides' dreams. Nishita couldn't help but imagine the transformation: from the loving, chatty woman she knew to the mythical, critical mother-in-law figure of legends. The thought alone made her stomach do somersaults as she tried to steady her trembling hands.
Despite her close bond with Mrs. Singh, Nishita couldn't shake off a lingering fear, fueled by her aunt's constant warnings and other people's ramblings about how women had to change after marriage, obeying their mothers-in-law. Whenever Nishita argued that Mrs. Singh was different, they laughed and told her to wait until she saw her true colors. Could it be true? Would Mrs. Singh, her ally in the Singh household, turn against her?
While most brides-to-be dreamt about their future husbands, Nishita was more concerned about her future mother-in-law. It was ironic, considering how quickly she had become attached to the Singh household, largely thanks to Mrs. Singh. In fact, it was Mrs. Singh who had made her start liking Jagdish in the first place.
But he's cute, and you do like him.
Yes, but I still don't really know him. Apart from his favorite color, food, and close friends and... I don't know him the way a wife should.
For that, you have to become his wife.
Okay, shut up!
"They are here, Nishu." Devika squealed, cutting through her thoughts.
Okay, let's go.
Or... Run away?
Argh!

Udvaha means marriage, so the upcoming chapters will dive deep into the wedding rituals and the whirlwind of thoughts that swirl in the minds of both the bride and groom during the big event. Speaking from experience, (even though I had a love marriage myself) I can tell you that as the wedding day approaches, your thoughts can go on a wild rollercoaster ride—at least, mine did. But once it was all over, I was incredibly happy and felt a bit foolish for all the unnecessary worry. I still can't quite fathom why I had second thoughts about the marriage, considering I'd taken ample time to think it through. Maybe it's just how our brains are wired.
Next up "Lal Dupatta" in shadi sangeet special.
I mean that's the occasion as well.
