Chapter 105: Lying To Near

APRIL 12, 2006

TOKYO, JAPAN

AT 11:30 AM

I walked into the hotel room and saw Near on the ground playing with dominos. "Hey," I greeted him. "Hey," he greeted me back. I watched as he turned around and looked at me. "What took you so long?" Near asked. "I'm sorry," I answered. "Just a long line in the pharmacy." Near looked at me with a confused look on my face. "Pharmacy?" he asked. "Did you have to pick up some medicine? What for?" I shrugged. "Eh," I let out. "It's not for me," I answered. "It's for Khloe. I want to make sure she is protected from getting fleas and ticks since you know how the weather is in the spring." Near chuckled. "We're in Japan, not in Texas," he reminded me. "I'm aware," I told him. I placed the medicine in the mini-fridge before I went to the floor and sat across from Near. "So, what do you think of the Kira case?" I asked. 

 "There's something I'm not getting," Near answered. "What are you not getting?" I asked. Near sighed. "Almost everything," I answered. "This case feels...different than the last Kira case." I made a confused look on my face. "What do you mean?" I asked. "Well, for starters, this Kira is very cautious and decided not to kill people," Near answered. "I've heard about the Other Kira who had a brief reign of terror." I was surprised to hear that Near knew about the Other Kira. "Rina Kanatomo," I muttered. I felt Near's eyes on me. "Yes," I heard Near say in a surprised tone. "Did you know her?" I looked at Near. "Not really," I answered. " I knew that she was a student at my school, but I wasn't friends with her. Chief Matsuda alerted me about her when he got kidnapped. How is she doing?" Near looked at me. "Why do you wanna know?" he asked. I shrugged. "I just wanna know," I answered. "Well, Rina's alright," Near informed me. "She's in jail. Chief Matsuda and the Task Force told her that she was arrested for stealing a car. The twist is she actually did steal a car. She stole Higuchi's Red Porsche from a car shop." 

I was shocked to hear that. "Wow," I let out. "I would have never guessed that she would have stolen a car." "Why did you think that she wouldn't?" Near asked. "Turns out Rina has a soft spot for Higuchi for killing her father's murderer. It kind of reminds me of Misa's love for Light Yagami a.k.a the first Kira." "I could understand that," I commented. "Light wasn't a bad guy." Near glared at me after I said that. "Actually, he was a good guy but was corrupted by the power of the Death Note," I corrected myself. Near slightly smiled. "Better," he said to me. "Anyway, I don't have any respect for Higuchi," I told Near. "I could respect Light or Mikami, but I..." Near looked at me with a confused look on his face. "Why would you respect them?" he asked. "The power of the Death Note may have corrupted Light and Mikami, but they decided to go down the path of darkness. They both had choices to stop right where they were, but they didn't. However, since Higuchi wasn't that much of a nice guy before he found the Death Note, I can see why you have no respect for him." "True, but I'm surprised that Rina would have respect for such an evil man," I commented. "He's not even attractive." 

Near scoffed. "That's true," he agreed. "It looks like his mother was a serial killer and fell in love with a man who was a good man." "What do you think what happened with Higuchi's father?" I asked. Near sighed. "I don't know," he answered. "I believe that Jiro's alcohol addiction got the better of him and caused him to die." Near looked at me. "Why are you so curious about this?" he asked. I scratched my head. "I don't know," I answered. "I'm thinking about writing a book about this." Near stayed silent for a little bit. "Why?" he asked. "Why not?" I asked. "It's not the best idea," Near answered. "You know about what happened to Sachiko Yagami, right?" I nodded. "Yes," I answered. "I remember seeing that one episode on The Dr. Phil Show when she got into a heated argument with Dr. Phil." "And don't forget about The Oprah Winfrey Show," Near added. "She almost punched Oprah."
