You rubbed tiredly your eyes and took a long sip from you (favourite tea) tea, trying quite hard to concentrate on your notes. The library was almost empty and so quiet and warm, it made you sleepy. In a train of thought you felt your head slowly sinking on the table, but you whipped it up again. Your eyes turned to the book and you tried to read it out loud.
"Every rational being in the Universe has a fear of dark. Actually, they aren't afraid of dark, but of what's in the dark," you inhaled shortly and opened your mouth to continue, "sometimes the things in the dark are worse than those in the light-"
"But not always," a voice said at your shoulder and you screamed loudly in fear, jumping away from the table and hitting your books off the table.
"W-what are......are you?" You were on the floor in a small slump and the shadows started gathering.
"That was rude," the voice echoed again and the lights blinked, "I'm not exactly alive but I'm not 'what'"
"Sorry," you said automatically and watched the small lump of shadows in the air. The the light above it went out and you could make out the shape of a person, perfectly onyx black.
"Nah, don't worry about it," the figure waved it off and took a step towards you, offering you it's hand to help you up. You took it and in one swift motion it pulled you up.
"Thanks," your voice sounded a little pitched so you cleared your throat. You stared for a second at it's face which was literally the blackest spot on the Earth and then, embarrased, you looked away, "so, who are you?"
"Luffy, nice to meetcha," the shadowboy, the voice was obviously male, had walked to your table and was messing with the notes on it.
"And I'm sorry but....which species are you?" Oh my God, Y/N, you can't just go and ask what species they are!
"Human,"
"Oh that's perfectly alright then- what! But you don't look like a human?" You watched him as he floated higher and taped a huge page of your notes on the ceiling.
"Oh I used to be. Died in an accident...what, 400-500 years ago? Don't remember very well."
"I'm sorry,"
"Why? Did you do something?" He asked curiously and you saw how easy it was actually to read his emotions. Luffy had a sort of a dome of lighter shadows swirling around it, making it obvious what mood he was in, depending on the speed and shape of shadows.
"no I just," you stopped, feeling pretty stupid apologising about someone else's death, "nevermind,"
"You're funny,"
Ever since that evening you had spent almost every evening in the library, half of it studying and other half kidding around with Luffy. He was sort of an echo, ghost, shadow, call it however you want, and yet he was materialised. That made him a good partner in pranks.
"Okay I'm tired," you almost fell onto one of the library's couches and closed your eyes. Today you two had discovered the headmaster sleeping in his office, and had stolen his wig, dunking it on one of the skeletons in labs.
"Already?" Luffy whined but stopped when he saw you had already dozed off and took your jacket from the back of a chair, covering you with it like with a blanket, whispering:
"Good night,"
