You bowed down a little to pet the small caramel furred poodle before pouring some dog food into his bowl. You pushed rest of the food to the back of the shelf and sat down behind the counter of the small pet shop you currently worked at.

Grabbing the book you were currently reading and a cup of coffee you seated yourself little more comfortably. That was the problem with working in such a small place, you had just about enough clients to scrape by and nothing more.

The small bell above door ringed softly and few dogs raised their heads, looking interestedly at the trio who had just walked in. In the middle stood quite a tall and dark man, his earrings and tanned skin making him looking like one of the gypsies who visited the town from time to time.

On his arms hanged two children, looking quite like him so you assumed he was their father. The girl squealed happily when she saw a puppy, but the boy remained quiet, so you wondered whether he could even see the shop behind his long bangs that covered half of his face.

"Can I help you?" You leaned on the counter, placing the book down and sipping on your drink.

"No, I think we're fine," the man looked little lost as the small girl was tugging on his arm to see the puppy and the boy only wanted to play with the phone he had fished out from somewhere.

"But uncleeeee," girl jumped excitedly, "you promised us a puppy todayyyy," man looked up apologisingly so you got up from your chair and leaned down at the girl, offering her your hand.

"Well, if he promised you a puppy you must see the puppies, right?" She grabbed your hand and cheered loudly, almost bursting your eardrums by doing so.

"Can we please see the smallest ones?" She tried to stuff her fingers into one of the cages but cat inside it hissed loudly so she stopped it. "The really really tiny ones."

"You mean the tiniest?" She nodded eagerly, "we have some pups who were born last week but surely-"

"Can we see them?" Girl gave you a pair of adorable babydoll eyes to which you weren't able to deny anything.

"Sure," you walked alongside her to the backroom and put one finger to your lips, motioning her to be quiet, "see?" The girl awwed in surprise when she saw a beautiful dalmatian laying in a bundle of blankets to keep warm, five small pups around her. Some eating, some just sleeping. They were still really helpless and pink, but already reminded dogs, not the hairless rats as before.

"They are so tiny," she gasped and looked behind her, "Karuha, uncle Law, come see too,"  the boy sigjed annoyedly and got his eyes off the screen for long enough to see the pups and grin at it, then going back to his game.

"Sorry but can you put the phone away?" You allowed yourself to look calm and mature, like always talikng with kids, "the noises disturb the pets around here," the boy didn't even acknowledge your present, so his uncle grabbed the phone from him and tucked it into his pocket.

"You heard the lady," he also quieted boy's protest.

"Yeah, yeah,"

"Can we get one of those?" The girl was still excitedly looking at them.

"Sorry, they are just too small and young," you patted her head and got up, opening the door to the front room, "but we have some dogs over there,"

Girl skipped happily over to the cages, followed by his bored brother. The started investigating the residents of the cages, girl chattering while boy only made some anappy remarks.

"Which one is the oldest, loves peace and is already trained?" The man looked baffledly at the kids.

"Let me guess, their mom doesn't know about that visit?" You laughed and closed the door, heading at the counter again.

"She does. And she also thinks we're getting a lizard," you giggled at the thought about the face of a woman who would come home expecting to see a harmless reptile but imstead of that finds a bunch of muddy pawprints and an overexcited owner of the paws.

"It's easy for you to laugh," the man mocked, "you have never dealt with my sister," so not their father, you noted in your head. But that doesn't mean he's free, argued the small voice in the back of your head. He looks pretty good too, probably has a girlfriend, the voice continued.

"Judging by your face I wouldn't want either," shut up shut up shut up, you yelled at your inner voices and kept grinning wide enough to hurt your cheeks.

"Yeah," he looked over at the kids who were petting a poodle and walked there, sitting down next to them and talking quietly.

He is cute, your head continued, and he flirted with you. So he's probably okay. Or he's just a player. Player wouldn'y waste his time with kids. How do you know? Ah shut up.

You suppressed a groan towards your overthinking brain and scratched one of the cats beneath the ear. Why were you even thinking about that? It was so unlike you to get all sparkly-eyed over a guy who had just walken into shop.

"Umm? Miss?" Girl stood on her toes to see over the counter, "can we get that puppy over there?" She grabbed your fingers and dragged you over the corner they had been sitting and showed you small white husky sitting on her uncle's head. Even the boy seemed really excited over the dog as he was giggling and petting the dog.

"Sure, do you have things like food already or do you need some?" You took the puppy from them and started checking it. The dog wiggled in your hands as you listened to it's heart and wrote down it's data.

"No we have those," the boy booped puppy's nose. "Uncle just didnt show mommy," man coughed embarrasedly.

"It was supposed to be a surprise to her,"

"I see," you petted the dog and handed him the dog's papers, ''you have filled all the necessary papers out online," you took a few long moments to check it all and also asked few questions about tge conditions of the house and all. "So the name goes here, here and  here," you pointed at the dotted lines, "and signature at here," he wrote everything down so messily you could barely make anything out.

"Done, she is yours," you handed him the dog.

"She?"

"Yup, it's a girl. Do you want a pink balloon too?" You joked and gave the dog's data to girl, "guard it with your life, it's really important," and  to not leave the boy out, you handed him a big bag of dog snacks.

"Okay bye," you waved after the leaving trio. What a sweet bunch.

They came back three days later because small girl had accidentally burned the dog's data you gave her.

Oops.

By the way, he asked you out.

It was awesome.
