"Are you going back to college?" You mutter to Kaneki over a cup of coffee in the security of your own, warm home. You had put a radiator on for no reason - it wasn't cold outside or inside but you were constantly shivering without any control.
"Yeah, but not for a while," he huffs to himself as he takes off his jumper to reveal a white shirt, "I need to get myself used to being a ghoul before being surrounded by my 'friends'. I don't understand myself yet," he says, sniffiling a bit as if he had a bad case of the flu.
"You'll need to stay at home today if that's the case," You say, mainly because you'd picked up on him snuffling and you were worried he would get even more sick if he went outside, "I need to go shopping for food again so you'll need to stay right here," You finish your coffee. You place the cup on the table and stand up, "Stay safe."
"Don't worry," Kaneki mutters, not even looking up at you as you put your shoes on. He stares at the table as if following every small line of dust until it comes to an abrupt end at the cliff on the edge.
You walk out the door with your wallet in your jeans pocket. You still have a lingering feeling of worry swirled in your stomach but you hope that Kaneki will be fine without you. Of course he will, he's not a child anymore. You walk into the busy street and immediately gets hit over and over again by selfish pedestrians who don't even have the dignity to say sorry.
"Hey, (Y/N)!" Someone says from behind you. The voice sounds bouncy so you don't feel too intimidated so you spin around to face Hide, Kaneki's friend, "I was wondering if Kaneki had come out of hospital yet. He hasn't been returning my calls."
"Uh," You mumble as my mind drifts to why Kaneki is ignoring his best friend, "Yeah, he came out last night," you feel terrible about lying to Hide since he's such a nice kid, "he just hasn't been feeling alright."
"Oh, you won't mind me dropping in later today then, will you?" Hide says giving you a big smile. He contorts his fingers so they're crossed.
"Of course," you return the smile as you begin to walk away.
"Thanks (Y/N)!" Hide shouts as he runs off in the other direction.
Would Kaneki mind if Hide drops in? No... surely not.
