You reach your house and open the door before lying Kaneki on his bed gently. He is still in his pyjamas which is a relief since you don't have to change him like a small child. Now, wouldn't that make you uncomfortable?
The state Kaneki is in makes reminds you of a young child, so helpless, depending on their guardian for their life. It's no surprise Kaneki feels so safe when you're around. The feeling is mutual too, since you're always feeling anxious when you don't know where he is or if he hasn't contacted you for a while.
As soon as you lie Kaneki down on his bed, he falls fast asleep again as if he just woke up from a nightmare but was lulled back to sleep.
You look at him helplessly. His eye still looks cracked but his face looks peaceful enough. Every now and then, his face scrunches up and little creases appear on the bridge of his nose as it twitches. What's he dreaming about? You worry. You have more questions now than you had when you were in Arithmetic class. What caused him to run off? Is he still in danger?
The thoughts cloud your mind like fog and you hurriedly grab a cushion and blanket from a cupboard and set up a simple bed next to him. As expected, the floor isn't half as comfy as your bed but you don't care.
You reach up to grab Kaneki's hand which is slowly dropping off the side of the bed. Your fingers lock together and, as you were drifting off into sleep, he gave your hand a little squeeze, causing you to look back up to the sleeping figure. His whole body, apart from the arm off the bed, is hidden from your sight so you can't see his pained face or watch his chest raising and falling quickly.
No, you're left completely oblivious.
Kaneki, I'll always protect you.
The night isn't silent. You wake up every hour as a result of your poorly timed body clock and each time you can hear Kaneki's groans get progressively louder. You resist the urge every time to wake him up because it would be conscious pain. "He's better asleep" , you kept telling yourself.
