It's a couple days after the strange fight against that malicious ghoul. You're making sure that Kaneki feels alright before allowing him to leave. You are going to accompany him to the cafe, just to make sure that he is alright. You'd made yourself take an oath to protect Kaneki since you watched him get beaten up.
You sit down in the back room with Kaneki and his manager. He's a strange chap that unsettles you for some reason. When he isn't concentrating on Kaneki and his actions, he is watching your every move and taking metal notes of your small habits - it was really annoying. You were watching Kaneki attempting to eat a sandwich. He was explaining the terrible taste growing in his mouth.
"The bread tastes like a dried-up sponge," Kaneki whined, "and the cheese smells like my socks after an intense workout."
"Gross," You mutter under your breath. You don't want to imagine it but your brain has other plans. You scrunch your nose up and close your eyes as you try to wash everything you just heard from your mind.
Kaneki's manager laughs at him, "Look," he says, taking another sandwich and biting it. You watch as he chews the food, doing what seems impossible for a ghoul, "The trick is to swallow it without chewing. Pretend to chew it about 10 times for good measure and try to make chewing noises for a more convincing act. But be sure to throw it up before your body starts to digest it."
"So," Kaneki asks with a small smile, "I'll be able to eat with Hide then?"
Ooh, dinner date!
"After some practice," Kaneki's manager says, smiling back at your brother, "Here," Kaneki takes a pot of brown sugar cubes off his manager, "if you dissolve them in coffee it will keep your hunger at bay for a while."
Kaneki looks down at the sugar cube. "What exactly does it contain?" he mumbles quietly so his manager could not hear. You hear his murmur and you instantly recognise that he's being sarcastic. It's obviously a substance similar to the one Touka gave him. Eww.
"Kaneki, could I trouble you to say behind tonight?" The Manager asks whilst eying you down. He seems cautious of you.
"Sure," Kaneki says, looking at you. You give him a nod, allowing him to stay behind but giving him a stern look to make sure he stays safe walking home. It's normal to want to stay by your brother's side, right?
You get up from the chair you were sitting in and walk out of the cafe. Afraid that the vicious ghoul might attack you again, you run home quickly. When you reach your house, you dart inside, taking a deep breath of relief but still nervous that Kaneki might not be so lucky.
