You open your eyes. You're in your room. It looks exactly the same but it smells different; hospital-like. You lift your right arm up. It looks normal enough but, as you twist it around to look at your elbow, you see a dark bruise stretching from your wrist to halfway between your elbow and shoulder.

You try to move your leg but it hurts too much. You try to sit up, leaning on your bruised elbow but a sudden pain shoots through you, making you fall back onto your back. You try again, this time using your left arm. You realise you can't really move it. You look over to you left shoulder with tired, blurry eyes. You notice your arm is going a different direction other than down to your side. You follow the bandaged wreck until it meets a sling resting on your chest. You wonder why you hadn't noticed it before, then your realise you have no feeling in your left arm.

You lift your head up since it doesn't hurt too much. Straining your eyes, you can just about see your legs. Your right leg - the one you tried to move earlier - was tightly wrapped with a white blanket. You wondered why you couldn't move it very well. You then notice a red stain in the centre of your lower leg. Your other leg doesn't seem effected so you don't bother trying to make out every last detail of it.

"Kaneki?" You call out. The door opens and he appears. "What happened?"

"We called the hospital." You go silent. "Your left arm is fractured from landing on it so suddenly, your right arm is badly bruised from hitting it on the floor after falling and your leg has a big cut in it, presumably from scraping it on the draw handle as you fell down."

He explains it to you. You're too confused to make proper sense of everything. You can't recall a time you had damaged so much in one accident. You feel relieved Tsukyama was able to get you help before anything worse happened. That's when you remember about him. You have no idea where he went after he had carried you out of the bathroom.

"Where's Tsukyama?" You ask Kaneki. He seems surprised by your question. It's true that you had never really cared about him before and he was the reason you panicked in the first place but he was also the one who had made sure you weren't too seriously hurt.

"He ran off..." Kaneki said, "he felt too guilty. He blames himself."

Your heart sinks. You don't know why but you want to see him. Maybe it's because you want to tell him that it's not his fault; that you overreacted. Maybe it's just because, in your confusion, you think he'll comfort you in some way.

Anyway, you have your brother with you. He's the only one you really care about. You open your right hand, signalling for him to come over to you. He does and takes your hand cautiously so he doesn't hurt you.

As you hold his hand, tears beginning to roll down your face, the door opens. Someone you never thought would turn up is there, looking as worried as his face would allow him.
