*Goku's and Vegeta's second anniversary! Goku insists on holding a little party, but Vegeta gets his revenge by preparing a surprise that Goku will never forget.*
"I still wonder how on earth you tamed that hell-spawn," Krillin laughed as he and Goku watched Vegeta tending to Marron, Bra, and his own two cubs. "Look at him. Who would've thought that Vegeta would make a good mom?"
"He's hardly tame!" Goku laughed, rubbing his neck. "He may be a great mom, but he's still Vegeta! That'll never change." The Saiyan chuckled. "Ya should have seen him last night when I told him about the party. He was livid! He scared me and the cubs. But thankfully he settled down and gave in. He's not tame, Krillin."
Krillin snickered evilly. "And yet you have those cubs, don't ya?"
"Krillin!" Goku laughed. "Eh... I gotta tell ya, some days it's a struggle. Between his temper and his ego, I've got my hands full!"
"Doesn't like to bottom, does he?"
"Krillin..."
"Goku, I'm your best friend."
"..... Ugh. It all depends on his mood, I guess," he replied grudgingly, although it did feel good to finally rant. "I just never know what to expect from him. Sometimes he's fine with whatever I want to do, sometimes he gets frustrated and expects me to know what he wants, and then... Oh Kami, don't even get me started about when he's drunk..."
Krillin laughed. "Damn, he's more complicated than a woman! How do you do it?"
"If we didn't have that mental connection, we'd have given it up long ago. You guys don't see it, but he gets really emotional. I've had him screaming at me, under the blankets crying, in my arms crying, running away from me crying..."
"That's... Wow, that's a lot of crying. Are we talking about the same Vegeta?"
"Believe it or not, yes." Goku grinned at his friend's confused expression.
"Kakarrot, come here!"
Goku sighed. "Coming, Vegeta." He stood up and moved over to his little mate, who stood with his hands on his hips. He bent down and gave Vegeta the kiss he knew he was waiting for. "Yes, darling?"
"Your anniversary present is ready."
Goku blinked. He thought for sure that they were going to give their gifts in private. Well, his gift anyway... Vegeta led him over to the piano that had magically appeared by the wall. With a yelp, Goku found himself in Vegeta's arms, then set on top of the instrument. "Vegeta?" he laughed.
Vegeta sat down, avoiding Goku's gaze. He cleared his throat and clenched his fists nervously. Everyone in the room was quiet. Vegeta's face flushed and he put his hands to the keys. Gentle notes poured out, almost sad, but a sense of a bare-open heart was there too. No one was prepared for what happened next.
"I'm trying to hold my breath... Let it stay this way; can't let this moment end.
You set off a dream in me, getting louder now. Can you hear it echoing?"Goku was speechless. He had no idea that Vegeta could play the piano, and never before had he sung in the presence of anyone but him or the cubs.
"Take my hand. Would you share this with me?" Vegeta looked up at Goku, eyes glittering with passion that Goku hardly ever saw. "Cause, darling, without you...
All the shine of a thousand spotlights, all the stars we steal from the night sky
Will never be enough, never be enough.
Towers of gold are still too little. These hands could hold the world but it'll
Never be enough, never be enough...
For me. Never, never. Never, never. Never, for me, for me.
Never enough, never, never. Never enough, never, never.
Never enough... for me, for me, for me..."The music had slowly intensified, and this was now noticeable. Vegeta's voice suddenly soared.
"All the shine of a thousand spotlights, all the stars we steal from the night sky
Will never be enough! Never be enough!" The agonizing effort to perfectly reach the high notes that were present were evident.
"Towers of gold are still too little. These hands could hold the world but it'll
Never be enough! Never be enough...
For me! Never, never! Never, never! Never, for me, for me!"
The notes shot even higher, and Goku could feel the ache behind Vegeta's powerful voice, but not once did his voice crack or waver.
"Never enough! Never, never! Never enough! Never, never!
Never enough! For me! For me! For me! For me..."Silence filled the room. Everyone was shocked. Tears streamed freely down Goku's cheeks. Vegeta blushed and rubbed his sore throat. Goku let out a wail, tackling his mate right off the seat. "Vegeta!!!"
"Love you too, Kakarrot," he rasped.
"Hot damn, Vegeta!" Krillin whooped. "You're talented! I thought you weren't gonna make it. How the hell did you get your voice to do that!?"
"Carefully and painfully," Vegeta whispered, hugging Goku. "I made those notes high intentionally, because I knew I would struggle to make it perfect for him." He smiled at his tall mate, who had regained his composure. "Today was actually the first time I've sung it; I'm just as surprised as you all are."
"That was beautiful, Geta," Goku murmured, gently rubbing Vegeta's throat. "You poor thing. That hurt so much I could feel it."
"Beautiful song for a beautiful man," Vegeta replied, kissing him. "I couldn't practice it or you'd hear me."
"That was brave of you," Eighteen murmured, crossing her arms. "I had no idea you could sing."
Vegeta chuckled, enjoying the attention. "Thanks. I'm not very good-"
"Liar!" Krillin exploded. "I don't compliment you often, Vegeta, but you have the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. Don't downplay your talents." The short man grinned at Goku. "That's one thing he can beat you at..."
"Tch!" Vegeta tossed his head. "Please, he can't hold a candle to me in hardly anything. He quit trying to overpower me weeks ago."
"Ehh," Goku protested. "Listen, I thought you were pregnant again, I was being gentle!"
"For sure, Kakarrot."
